The Beast of War (about soviet tanksoldiers in afganistan) Gods and Generals (very realistic film about american civil war trilogy)
A week ago I saw the brilliant W.W. I movie "Paths of glory", directed by Stanley Kubrick: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050825/ I can really recommend this movie which gives a pretty good impression of the trench warfare and the madness of war. My all-time favorite war-movie is "A bridge too far" (1977), because it made a big impression of me when I was a little boy: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075784/ Another brilliant movie is "The cross of iron" about the grueling fighting around the Kuban bridgehead in 1943, based on the novel "Das geduldige Fleisch" (The patient meat) of Willi Heinrich: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074695/
I hate Stanley Kubrick. Otherwise i'd go and try to see that movie, but now that you've mentioned the director, why would I bother? Cross of Iron looks really cool though.
The old Waterloo movie with Rod Steiger as Napoleon is pretty good. My favorite scene is at the first of the movie when Napoleon abdicated in 1814. Great scene! The Gettysburg movie with Charles Sheen as Robert E. Lee is the best ever made on the topic. It is based on the book "Killer Angels" (historical novel) and well worth reading. Having been to Gettysburg several times, Longstreet was quite correct when he said no 12,000 men ever born could take that ridge (refering to Pickett's last charge). Out of some 12,000 men, 6,000 were casualties in the space of an hour. Walking the ground of Pickett's charge, it is a long open field. There are numerous dips and gullys in the ground but then as you approach the stone wall in the final leg of the walk, the fire the Confederates were under at that point would have been unbelievable. If you have never been to Gettysburg and you get the chance to go, allow for two full days to view the entire battlefield. Also, try and go in winter time or early spring as there is much undergrowth these days that did not exist during the battle. :smok:
I agree Gettysburg was an excellent movie, but Charlie Sheen as Robert E. Lee was pathetic. He portrayed him as a doddering old man who mostly sat in his rocking chair. Sheen has talent (don't like his goofy politics), but he misplayed this part. Robert Duvall did much better in Gods and Generals. For a masterful bit of acting, how about Tom Berenger as General Longstreet? He made me believe he was Longstreet. That's acting.
I'm not sure I agree with you on Sheen as Lee. I thought he played it very well, and if anything, he might have been a little too polite. The confrontation between Lee and Longstreet at the battle was a bit played down in my opinion. Lee was a devoutly religious man and I think that's what Sheen was concentrating on. I saw no hesitation in his mannerism at all, even when there should have been. His confrontation with Stuart was fantastic and well acted. And to think... the decisive battle of the Civil War was all about getting some new boots! :smok:
General Lee was played by Martin Sheen in "Gettysburg", not his son Charlie. And I preferred his performance to Robert Duvall's in "Gods and Generals". Duvall played Lee like an old man, not Sheen. Sheen showed Lee as very active throughout the film. The one time he sat in a rocking chair was when he was going to sleep at the end of the first day of battle. Robert Duvall is a talented actor, but far too old for the role. He sounded like he was going to keel over and die at any moment throughout the movie.
I saw "Gettysburg" just yesterday, and having seen "Gods and Generals" earlier I must say I agree with SgtBob on the Lee thing. Robert Duvall is a marvellous actor (anyone seen "Falling Down"?) and he certainly played the part of the Southern Army's Nestor much better than Sheen did. In "Gettysburg" it seems that just about every field commander is a tactical talent except for Lee, who thinks only in charges. To say that he looks like he's about to roll over and die is nonsense, IMHO, since some actors can look very strong despite their age, and Robert Duvall certainly is one of them.
Dancing with wolfes: Extreemly good movie Last of the mohicans: I love that movie The Patriot: Very good movie Black hawk down: Exellent movie Oh yeah and offcourse George lucas's "Starwars trilogy" , hey its a war movie, right......... . KBO
There is a WWI movie called Blue Max (if I recall correctly) which features lots of WWI dogfights. An exellent movie, which I just happened to find on DVD the other day
There was one I saw a long time ago, about the duel between a British pilot and the Red Baron. It was OK, except for being extremely cheap.
Christian, is that Blue Max movie this? I saw it when I was a kid and I'd like to see it again. Unfortunatelly you cant find it on DVD here, only import-stuff. Other movies I'd like to find are The Big Red One and The Battle of River Plate. As a naval enthusiast, that latter one is must! Althought I believe its not as good as I remember.
It's not as good as you remember. It was on TV here recently and to me was only vaguley close to reality. I believe they used a USN crusier as the "Graf Spee"!
I vaguely remember seeing that. As far as deviation from history there have been worse. They did use at least some film of real warships but as far as I remember of the four ships only one looked anything like the ship it supposed to be. Did see a TV documentary of the Bismark mission they had some very nice computer generated bits showing the Swordfish attack from cockpit point of view. Pity I was watching on a TV with a bad reception.
