http://www.1tot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1379 How Would The D-Day Invasion be reported by today's liberal press? June 6, 1944. -NORMANDY- Three hundred French civilians were killed and thousands more wounded today in the first hours of America's invasion of continental Europe. Casualties were heaviest among women and children. Most of the French casualties were the result of artillery fire from American ships attempting to knock out German fortifications prior to the landing of hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops. Reports from a makeshift hospital in the French town of St. Mere Eglise said the carnage was far worse than the French had anticipated and reaction against the American invasion was running high. "We are dying for no reason," said a Frenchman speaking on condition of anonymity "Americans can't even shoot straight. I never thought I'd say this, but life was better under Adolph Hitler." The invasion also caused severe environmental damage. American troops, tanks, trucks and machinery destroyed miles of pristine shoreline and thousands of acres of ecologically sensitive wetlands. It was believed that the habitat of the spineless French crab was completely wiped out, threatening the species with extinction A representative of Greenpeace said his organization, which had tried to stall the invasion for over a year, was appalled at the destruction, but not surprised. "This is just another example of how the military destroys the environment without a second thought, " said Christine Moanmore. "And it's all about corporate greed." Contacted at his Manhattan condo, a member of the French government-in-exile who abandoned Paris when Hitler invaded said the invasion was based solely on American financial interests. "Everyone knows that President Roosevelt has ties to big beer," said Pierre LeClair. "Once the German beer industry is conquered, Roosevelt's beer cronies will control the world market and make a fortune." Administration supporters said America's aggressive actions were based in part on the assertions of controversial scientist Albert Einstein, who sent a letter to Roosevelt speculating that the Germans were developing a secret weapon, a so-called "atomic bomb." Such a weapon could produce casualties on a scale never seen before and cause environmental damage that could last for thousands of years. Hitler has denied having such a weapon and international inspectors were unable to locate such weapons even after spending two long weekends in Germany. Shortly after the invasion began reports surfaced that German prisoners had been abused by Americans. Mistreatment of Jews by Germans at so-called "concentration camps" has been rumored but so far, remains unproven. Several thousand Americans died during the first hours of the invasion and French officials are concerned that uncollected corpses pose a public health risk. "The Americans should have planned for this in advance," they said. "It's their mess and we don't intend to clean it up."
 Very good! (and worryingly true...) only little picky point, as I'm such a pedant: Surely all crabs are spineless? (yes, I know, it is making a point, but I'm being a pedant here! )
Well written.I would imagine there are some fools who would have viewed in invasion in a very similar light. Are there any further 'articles' concerning skewed views on recorded history?
Very true indeed. But I still prefer having a press that critices war a bit too much than having one that doesn't criticise it at all. I also often felt annoyed about pacifist papers or so called intelectuals but in a democracy you have the right to say what you want. Fortunately you can choose which papers to read, or to whom to listen.
Let's not forget how FDR would be blamed for the near-disaster at Omaha. Lack of good planning and all that. No, never-mind, FDR was always an "untouchable" for a liberal press. On a similar note, can you imagine today's press covering a Tarawa invasion. They would demand the U.S. disband the Marines and sue the Japanese for peace (just what Tojo had in mind).
It seems that liberal press in the US is pretty bad... I mean, certain 'papers' certainly would depict the invasion like this, but to think that anything mainstream would just scares me. What, did liberal press complain about the ruined habitat of desert spiders in Iraq?
The American media doesn't report on anything unless it involves murder,rape,extorsion........etc.If it's good news,it ain't worth reporting. Channel 2 in Chicago interupted a football game twice Sunday to make sure we all knew about a semi that plowed into a car killing a baby. The police are almost always portrayed in a negative light. The story is almost always told from the view of the poor criminal.A friend of mine is a Chicago police officer. He and his partner pulled a half dozen people out of a burning building one morning.Do you think that was reported?Nope! It's so bad that I don't bother to watch the news at all.Only to check the weather.I got the weather channel for that so I am spared the bullshit.I won't even get into politics.
Americans, that are removed from war, that are very natioanlistic seem to tolerate war to serve America's interests until the body bags of their mothers and fathers and children arrive home. It's a sad state of affairs for my friends serving in Afganastan in both the Canadian and American armies. With the above said I can relate to your posts on how the invasion would be reported. Hey Role could you sned him a copy of that MP3 I sent you, on the live radio reporting of the Normandy landings? Is it possible to have that on the site to listen to?
No matter how much you hate him, you've got to admit that Michael Moore hit the mark when taking this into account in "Bowling for Columbine". It breeds fear. Mutant Poodle: I'm very sorry to report that I lost the recording when our computer broke down a while ago.
