Once again I am inspired by Erickson's 'Road to Stalingrad. I am much impressed by the performance of Colonel General Kirponos in 1941 against the Germans. I would say that by far Kirponos was the best leader on the Soviet Western Front. Does anyone know of any other Soviet commanders who enjoyed even remotely the amount of success that Kirponos did? Also does anyone know where Kirponos is from? Daniel
Daniel, I don't want to rain on your parade, but Ericksion, is...nice...to have been read. I know this sounds pretty snobby, but if you really want to have an update account of the currrent, state-of-the-art, historical USSR-GY war, you really need to learn both German or Russian to get the full picture...Don't get me wrong, Erickson, Glantz et at are cool.., but to get a "fitting" real picture you just have to read tHE russian or German studies to get a more comprehensive picture. I guess todays histography it`s just like reading a Russian history book about D-Day: princpially right, but sooo far away from what had really happened... Please, this isn't meant personal...I'm a complete moron in anything re: the PTO, what doesnt mean that any of my foolish concusions is basd on anything more than, well...guessing. I'm just not a PTO pro...but I THINK that 'm kinda "WW II East Front til 41" -pro. Maybe I'm wrong Cheers, [ 24. January 2004, 06:52 PM: Message edited by: AndyW ]
I am not ignorant of the fact that the German and Soviet sources are the best you could access, however, at this point I am not able to read Russian, and very little German. English sources are my only option at this point. Would a Russian or German source disagree about Kirponos' role in the early fighting? Daniel
