This is alot like the "which branch of military" post but...
If you could choose...which navy would you have rather served in. and or what ship would you have liked to serve in?...or maybe you would rather be in the marines? You can pick any time during the war and any theater of course!

Well, I suppose that if I HAD to be in the navy, at least the Royal Navy was "wet" (allowed alcohol on board ship). [IMG]

LOL Rum is always nice (i hink that's what the british had ?)
Of course i guess i would have to pick the US navy. Most prefered to least prefered for me would be... US navy (any time) British navy(any time) Japanese navy (41-43) German navy (39-43) and finally Italian navy.
I think that if i had to choose...i would want to be on a Heavy Cruiser or Battleship! They are in the thick of things but were not prime targets for kamakazes (at least cruisers wern't) But both played out their tasks well. Cruisers seemed to play a very important role in the war...from escorts against aircraft and subs to being right there with the battleships during surface battles...to bombardment of bases. to be on a cruiser looks like to me that you could play many roles in combat yet be a secondary target ( unless they are the capital ships as in guadalcanal!)

I would be in the Kriegsmarine, U 181, simply because I am friends with all the survivors, god bless them all.

Reinhard Hardegen's U-123 during Operation PAUKENSCHLAG on the US East Coast.

Wolfgang Luth's U-48 during his epic 8 month tour.

Z-2 'Georg Thiele' at Narvik-simply because I'm interested in its demise.

    US Carrier at Midway. Gunner.

I´d be the radist for Bismarck and when ordered to send the Luthjens´ 30 minute speech to Hitler I´d say "Ja,ja" but actually would not...

    Panzerknacker,

That would be Lüth's U 181 for the 8 month voyage. And you would be a Carl's crewmate! Lüth never commanded U 48.

    FYI, Lüth's patrol was topped by Eitel-Friedrich Kentrat's U 196.

I choose the german destroyer Friedrich Eckholt because I have the photo book of one the men who served on it. Unfortunatley I never met the man himself but I found his stepdaughter and talked with her about him.

US Carrier pilot in the marainas turkey shoot!!! Of course, I don't think they were using corsairs yet, though. That's what I'd like to fly. Guess I can settle for a hellcat.

Probably in the U47 of Günther Prien. But before October 1939.

The fact that you are going into a heavily defended port, Scapa Flow, to attak the HMS Royal Oak.

I have always liked the opening shot of the old TV show "McHeils Navy", with the PT boat and crew out in the wind and sun. Of course if a storm came up I would not want to be anywhere near a PT Boat. [IMG]

I'd serve aboard U-124...Kapitänleutnant Johann Mohr boat. In 6 patrols we would sink 29 ships for a total of 135.067 tons. Including a light cruiser & corvette.

Unfortunately on April 2 1943...my boat would be my coffin. :(

    HMS Warspite.

My least favourite would have been a Russian Submarine.
