I am no fan of mr bean (I do enjoy rowan atkinson though), nor do I hate it.
But I fail to see how it should be considered positive that this country of sometimes extremely painful and extremely funny (but most times just extremely painful) programs creating sadastic people enjoys mr bean.

Hang on in there, Stix, it shouldn't take a shedload of emails to enable you to grasp my point, orotund though it may be !

The kernel of my post was that, given that the Japanese have traditionally gotten a laugh out of someone being actually physically maltreated, the mere fact that they have now shown themselves possible of being vastly amused by the harmless antics of a retarded cretin who is neither being given, nor dispensing pain, can only be accepted as being a giant step for mankind forwards towards even the Japanese becoming totally civilised.
And if that ain't something to laff about, then I don't know what the f**k is !
    Vay con Dios, amigo,

Ok I understand your point now, but I don't agree with it.
I would consider that a step backwards as I find sadism one of the greatest forms of humor/entertainment.
Also note that at least the larger share of the contestants on said shows are Japanese people who out of free will participate in such shows.
Though one can only assume, it seems likely to me that one would not do such a thing unless it would be considered enjoyable on one level or another.
We narrow-minded westerners would consider it perverted or some other negative quality that anyone would willingly suffer pain.
Yet seeing how long running and popular these shows are the Japanese are apparently far less judgemental about such things.

My choice is that I ask only that you understand my point;your choice is, of course, as to whether or not you elect to agree with me. So- no problemos on that one then, huh ?

One a bad day ( for me, that is, not for you ) I could be open to persuasion that sadism is perhaps a great source of pleasure, but I'd have to draw the line at it ever being construed as entertainment, but then maybe I'm a "narrow minded Westerner" ?

As for it only ever being Japs who perform in these shows, well I cannot but help that that goes a long way towards establishing the Japanese pysche in most people's eyes.

If my recent experience of the Japanese is any guide, then I can only say that maybe they are starting to become judgemental, since I was recently fortunate enough to have a Japanese 25 year old girl as a mistress for nearly three years . When she first came to England she would think nothing of cooking up a couple of dolphin steaks for my supper; when she went back she was an extremely earnest member of Greenpeace and had not only dedicated herself to the protection of dolphins, but had ceased to have anything to do with her Pop, who was a Japanese fishing boat owner............but she still laffed at Japanese games shows !!!!! .

Just stating what I see, but it sounds that as far as experience is a factor you have the upper hand.
Suffice to say; they make/made sadistic shows which is declining, and you and I have a different opinion when it comes to entertainment and cultural standards.

And boy, are we offtopic :D

Nice of you to be so complimentary about my range of experience, but I am probably twice your age and have no doubts whatsoever that you'll be coming up fast in that respect, since your comments certainly indicate a maturity and wisdom beyond what I suspect are your years !

Yeah, we are a smidgin or two off topic, aint' we. I can call it a day, if that's OK with you, me old china ! Auf weidersein !
