Hello all, I've got a small question. Most (if not all) of the US tanks were given the M letter (M8, ..). However, the Staghound has got a T (T17)... why? :-?
In the US system items were given an "M" once they'd been accepted for service, a "T" means that it's a test, prototype or experimental vehicle. Strangely enough the Russian system is exactly the other way round for tanks... PS, welcome to the forum
Thanks! But the Staghound wasn't a test anymore? It was used in combat at the end of the war (even in Belgium, at the Piron Brigade), and after the war. Did they built a test-version of it, and afterwards decided to keep the T anyways? Greetings
From what I can tell, it wasn't accepted for service by the US, but by the British, and presumably we didn't care what number it had since we tended to call things by name... http://www.wwiivehicles.com/usa/armored ... dcars.html gives some information
I like the Staghound III - it's a beautiful beast and actually one of the very few existing (maybe the very last ?) is preserved in Denmark
Yes you're right, I found this on http://www.armyvehicles.dk/staghound.htm "From the beginning armoured with a 37 mm gun (Mk I), but later a number of vehicles had the turret replaced with the turret from the Crusader tank (Mk III), which became available as the Crusader was superseded by the Cromwell and the Sherman tanks."
In fact the Staghound T17E1 got a TENTATIVE M number (M6 IIRC) but this was a one sided move by Chevrolet (added on the manufacturer data plate!). The Staghound was only used by Commonwealth troops plus the Polish Army (delivered through Lend-Lease channels). The Staghound III turret was indeed the one used on the Crusader III but slightly modified (see for instance the right hatch). Thanks for the posted photos. HTH
I don't get armored cars with armaments like the 75mm I noticed that there isn't much difference in speed... so were they cheaper, more reliable, more maneuverable? well maybe they just look cool
More able to defend itself when caught. It's not really a working concept since recce units aren't supposed to fight, they're supposed to run away when spotted, but it makes them a little harder to get. This one has a 6pdr by the way, which is a 57mm gun.
Hi Roel If you are referring to the Staghound on the pictures, it has actually a Crusader 3 turret with a 75 mm gun. The British 75 mm was developed from the 6 pdt, and of similar dimensions as far as I remember
