    hello every1,

i was wondering if anyone knew of an american base on a pacific island surrounded by japanese.

would such a base even be possible, or would the americans try to take over the island before establishing a base?

    here's why i ask:

im doing a screenplay where i have the americans on one side of the island and a japanese base on the other. the americans are kind of stranded there for the moment and are subject to japanese attacks every once in while.

    is this too far fetched?

    thank you

Being "surrounded" and being subjected to repeated Japanese frontal attacks are two different matters.

In one sense, most Marines on Iwo were surrounded because of the extensive tunnels the Japanese had constructed. Marines were shot at from the front, sides, and from behind.

Individual groups were cut off from their units on many occasions in both Pacific theaters - the Central under Adm. Nimitz and the Southwest under Gen. MacArthur.

I'd recommend reading a good general account of the Pacific campaigns. Ronald Spector's Eagle Against the Sun is one. Richard Wheeler wrote another, but I forget the title. I'll try to find it for you.

Wheeler's book is A Special Valor, but it's mostly about the Marine Corps and does not detail Army actions.

I gather this movie is to be of the same accuracy as Pearl Harbor?

There was a similar themed movie done in the past but I don't recall the name. A group of marines were on the island and a group of Japanese also. They amputated the leg of one of the Japanese and at the end of the movie the Japanese were wiped out and the Americans rescued.

Sounds a lot like the events when the Japanese took the Phillipines.

Frank Sinatra, Clint Walker, Tommy Sands, Brad Dexter were the "stars" of the movie.

This wouldn't be hard to do if you sent in a couple of submarines full of Raiders, then had the subs sunk on the way to extract them. An ad hoc force of subs and surface ships would "ride to the rescue", with the sole carrier in the area (previously damaged in battle and desperately being repaired) arriving just in time to provide air cover. (The CV would be at Pearl, where the CAG has fallen for the wife of the Raider's CO and is having a moral/ethical war to fight while still getting his squadrons battle ready while integrating the young-and-wild replacements into his team.) Meanwhile, on the island . . .

Fiction is easy. You take reality and remove the "real" part. :D

You do realise that that was sarcasm right? The last PH movie is considered by many to be about as low on the accuracy scale as you can go.

There was a film set during the Korean war about an American base surrounded by the enemy that held out after wave after wave of enemy assaults, can't remember what it was
    though.

The allies in Burma had several airfields in operation that were surrounded by the IJA.

    Episode 2 of The Pacific.

"By October 1942, the Marines on Guadalcanal are fighting hunger and the jungle as well as the Japanese. The arrival of an Army unit helps somewhat but the Marines realize just how under-equipped they are by comparison. The Japanese are reinforcing their troops with ease and the men are facing nightly attacks at Henderson Field."
