I'm interested in any information regarding German Recon tactics - armored or unarmored. Any book leads or websites would be greatly appreciated. Particular interest is paid to the application and actual process of recon, methods, etc. Thank you!
Guten morgen Modus from a cold Grants Pass, Oregon...... say do you want something in the German language or English ? Will have to dig a little but I bet Andreas or Friedrich could fill you in pretty fast. I have a couple of photo-type albums but nothing really on the tactics or abteilung/kompanie breakdowns. I do believe there was a book in German from the 17th SS Pz. Grend. Div on it's recon Abteilung which was done in 2 ? volumes by Helmut Günther. have you tried your search engines yet...... ? E
I know one low-tech tactic that was employed. When armoured forces were involved, an NCO of the Panzer Korps would conduct forward reconnaisance with the infantrymen to check for themselves teh conditions ahead. Hope this helps...
My discount bookstore gotta book called Fighting technics of the panzergrenadiere. Might be of interest. Don't know the author or ISBN. Wanna have it?
Have that one Steve, and it's not a bad source. Erich - Either language is acceptable. I can get it translated from one of my friends. What I'm really interested in is what was used - be it textbooks from a Offiziere Schule or very detailed After Action Reports... You have my attention in regard to your photo albums as well! I'd love to see any photos of Armored Recon Abt. from 44-45. Thanks again!
Modus : Yes Günther did in fact write two volumes on his recon Abteilung. The problem is I can;t remember if he published them through the old OOP Munin Verlag or Podzun Verlag publishing. Whether they can be found I do not know. Schiffer pubs on the east coast I thought had 1 or 2 books on the subject, and am thinking one was the Waffen SS recon abteilungs. There is a motorcycle unit on the front cover of one if my memory serves me correct..........with my luck no. I rememberd that the photo album covered the Panzergrenadieres and it really just shows light units travelling by half track which was the standard in 44-45. I do believe that armored cars were something of the past by this time except that VW's and similar cars were still used in these forward units, plus motorcyles and even bicycles. Former Oberst, Horst Scheibert also wrote a book on the armored recon abteilungs and this is another (I think) published book by Schiffer as well a few years back. E
