Season 7, Epi. 3, they go after "one of the very earliest Spitfires", one that crashed in France 23 May 1940.
Remember on one of the aircraft digs Phil Harding fell out with the aviation enthusiasts over the way the dig was going. Can't remember if they thought he was too slow using a spade, or he complained about them using a JCB.,
Time Team is, after all, television..... Yes indeed there was controversy after the Spitfire dig - TT always had this 'we've only got three days to do it' timeframe which in this case led to the bulk of the airframe being unceremoniously dragged out of the ground. I remember watching the B-17 dig on TV many years ago which again, had a 'we solve the mystery' framework - but only after a visit to a local aviation museum provided the original propellers and also pretty much the full story.... I remember thinking that maybe a visit to a local museum would be your first port of call, not your last, but hey - that's entertainment !
