Amazing what you find when you're not looking for it. Was online last night looking for information on a dovecot at an old mansion in Falkirk, about 15 miles away, when I found mention of loopholes in the wall of the local cemetery. Went through today, and found there was about 26 of them in pairs in the South wall, originally facing down the main road but now overlooking the M9 motorway. Probably originally cut for the Home Guard to mount a defensive perimeter for RAF Grangemouth, which was about 1/4 mile to the North. I like surprises.
Gordon, its surprising what you come across when your not actually looking for it. I travel quite a lot with my job and very often come across pillboxes and the like in some unlikely places. One that comes to mind is a small fortification on the side of a rural road in the Shropshire countryside. I can only assume that the road, or maybe a nearby railway or canal, was once deemed a strategic route for the Germans had they invaded the UK.
