I am new and trying to find out what unit my father Leroy Hand was in in WW2. He volunteered for a QM Truck company in Kansas and was stationed on Hawaii. While there he seemed to have volunteered for the 27th Div. from NY. He took judo lessons in Hawaii and taught other soldiers. He then fought in Saipan and Okinawa. His stories implied he was part of a special unit that did scouting and reconnaissance. I have a picture of him relaxing (probably in Hawaii) with other soldiers. Their names, hand written on the picture, were, Foley, Riley, Murray, Kelly, Roach and Sheffield.
This might help...27th NY Infantry Division during World War Two - NY Military Museum and Veterans Research Center There was something I caught quickly on the AHC about how Marine General Holland "Howlin Mad" Smith grabbed the 27th commander General Ralph Smith by the collar and told him to get the hell off the island.
