I posted this in another thread but wanted to start one specifically for this. I am taking my father to Normandy in a couple of weeks to visit his brother's gravesite. I am trying to piece together bits of information to follow his journey and visit the vicinties while there. His name was Virgil Ray Eadens (went by Ray). He joined the 313th Infantry Regiment out of Detroit Michigan. He was in the 157th Infantry Brigade, He was also in the 79th Infantry Division. A picture of him also shows a 42nd Division Rainbow Patch. He was in the Battle of Cherbourg. His last letter was written from underneath an apple tree on June 18th. He was wounded on June 22, 1944 and died 2 days later. What I am looking for is info on: 1. Did anyone know him 2. Exactly where was his troop on June 18th, June 22nd I just discovered this site. For all veterans on here, thank you so much for your service that has enabled all of us to live in a free country. God bless you.
My father-in-law, Frank Combs, was in Co. H, 313th of the 79th. He also was from Detroit, MI. Is this query still active? I'd like to make contact.
I don't believe the poster is still around. Why don't you start a new thread with your father-in-law's name. Tell us what you know and we'll do our best to fill in the blanks.
Hello. My question is Who was the Commander ( a Colonel) of the 313th Infantry, part of the 79th Infantry during the invasion of Cherbourg (France). FYI - I am reading an interesting book "Written Under Fire" written by Baltimore (MD) Sun WWII War Correspondents (Paperback). In this book, the Colonel of the 313th Infantry is consistently referred to as the "Old Man". I am interested in learning who this individual is? I have my own posting "2759th Engineer Combat Battalion originally the "591st Engineer Boat Regiment". Any information would be appreciated. Thank you, Jake Jr
