"The Bridge Over The River Kwai" - or what?

I have a film at home wich title is "The Bridge Over The River Kwai" in a direct translation from the swedish, but i don't know what it is in english. Anyway, it's about a english colonel wich troops have been captured in Burma and was sent to a japanes POW camp were they was set to build a bridge for japanese trains.

The colonel refuses that english officers shall do labor work and later the japanese C-in-C is letting the colonel and his officer lead the constuction. Later an allied squad sends to destroy the bridge.

Do anyone know what this movie is called in english?

 

It is called The Bridge over the River Kwai. Based on real events if memory serves me right but changed in certain respects. but certainly a good film.

Very wellmade movie and is definately on my list of DVDs to buy. I once built a toothpick model of the bridge. I destroyed it with BB gunfire instead of TNT.

Some would call it bridge over the river Kwai,
most of us in UK would call it OH NO it must be Christmas day again.

 

I'd always thought that was 'The Great Escape', urqh...seen it so many times at Christmas, it's fun to turn the sound down and mime the words....

 

The film is good and based on real events to a large degree, however the bridge was not attacked by Commandos, rather it was blown up by a group of B24 Liberators. I have also heared that the Colonel played by Guiness was rather different in real life, I always thought he was rather a misunderstood character, I mean everyone seems to view him as a traitor but really, he was making a point and he did it well.

 

Thats it--IM moving to England--you guys get all the best movies shown on holidays. The only movie we can top you guys with is James Stewarts: "It's A Wonderful Life," which is always played at Christmastime here.

Now--used to--you guys couldn't beat us with holidays movies.

For example on Thanksgiving Day--we could see these played in a row one after the other: "Boys Town" w/ Spencer Tracey, "Mutiny On The Bounty" w/ Clark Gable and Charles Laughton,(My fav Mutiny version))and "Sergeant York" with Gary Cooper.

Christmas we would have: "It's A Wonderful Life" and "Three Godfathers" w/ John Wayne, Harry Carey Jr. Ward Bond and Pedro Armendariez.

Easter we would have "The Alamo" w/ John Wayne and "Moses" w/ Charlton Heston.

4th of July, we used to get classics like: "The Seahawk" w/ Errol Flynn, Alan Hale Sr and Olivia DeHavilland. "Charge of the Light Brigade" w/ Flynn, DeHavilland and David Niven. "They Died with Their Boots On" w/ Errol Flynn, Arthur Kennedy and Sidney Greenstreet. "The Adventures of Robin Hood" w/ Errol Flynn, Olivia DeHavilland, Alan Hale Sr. and Basil Rathbone. "The Alamo" again and gladly, w/ John Wayne, Richard Widmark, Chill Wills, Pat Wayne, and so many others.

Nowadays--they usually play nothing but pure crap --unless you get lucky and some station somewhere still plays the classics.

 

Errol Flyn rules, I cant decide which film of his is best but I reckon Robin Hood is probably up there. Apparently during the fight scene at the end with Rathbone (both he and Flyn were expert swordsmen) the director said it was not realistic enough so flyn charged over and cut his arm saying 'is this how real you want it?' or words to that effect...

 

Quite true and I seem to remember hearing that story from somewhere before.

Yeah--its too difficult to choose which Flynn film is the best. I'd be always choosing different ones for different reasons.

To add to his greats Objective Burma, Dawn Patrol Captain Blood and Desperate Journey. I love em all.

 

And what was the name of that one where William Holden plays a U.S. Navy (F-9 Panther I think?) pilot over Korea? "The Bridges at Koko Ri" or something like that? I believe Mickey Rooney was in it as well, as a chopper pilot.

 

It was 'the Bridges At Toko-Ri'

 

And it did have Mickey Rooney as the Chopper pilot and Earl Holliman was his Crew Chief.

 

In the WWII game Commandos 2 it is a level called "The bridge over the river Kwai" and is a copy of the movie. You are to rescue the british colonel and in the game he's name is Guiness, like the actor, later you're gonna destroy the bridge.

 

Popular misconception but film is called Bridge ON the River Kwai, not over. It was in britain anyhow. American title may differ thou.
