I have "The Black Book" on deck for my next stretch of days off. I have seen parts of it before, but never had the chance to watch it all the way through just yet. Looking forward to it.
A remake? Hey Kai, give us an indepth review on this will ya? ;-)) Just started watching Season 5 of COMBAT-which is in color. So far guests have included: Fritz Weaver & Bil Bixby. Recently saw at the end of season 4-a great episode with Claude Akins in it-as a German agent who is undercover and is spying on recently captured GIs-trying to get new info. And thankfully, Claude Akins ws also in two season 5 episodes including one that is about the Redball Express.
Caught the end of a programme called Tank Overhaul last night, about enthusiasts restoring tanks (funnily enough!). The star for me was the guy in England who has already restored one Comet (in 7th Armoured Div colours, and named Victor-never got the serial no.) to full running order, and is currently restoring another three!
Still watching Season 5 (In Color) of COMBAT. This season has some magnificent episodes-as all its seasons have. Even in color-this show could easily have made a few more seasons had the production costs not skyrocketed.
An excellent movie if ever there was one ;-)) Though Sam Fuller has made many of my favorite movies also including Fixed Bayonets--I would have loved to see how this movie would have been-had it been directed by Sam Peckinpah.
I watched "Black Book" the other day all the way through for the first time. It was a very well made movie, and gave a good look into the life of the resistance network in The Netherlands. I'm sure resistance fighters all over had the same sort of problems to deal with during the war. I must admit that I'm not "up" on that side of the war, the underground efforts that is. If it were me, I'd try to escape and enlist into a regular unit of expatriates since I was never comfortable with the sneaking around and hiding in plain sight thing. But if that's all I could do to contribute to the war effort and fight for my country (in the resistance), then that's what I would do. FYI, the leading lady in the "Black Book" played the wife of Von Stauffenburg in "Valkyrie" also. No, I didn't notice it at first, I read it in imdb!
The Raid, BBC1 last night. Fits nicely in with present reading of Prisoners of the Japanese. One of the camps brought to life out of the book and onto the screen.
This will make Carl put his thumbs up...last night in many, many moons I saw..... McQ Shame old JW only did two cop films that I know of...he was great in both of them.
Hello Carl! The new German made version actually is made in very much in the same footsteps as the original one in the 50´s ( black-white ). "Interesting pair" as the machine gun bunkers had a maxim and a MG42. I think the guy shooting with MG42 shot at least 1,000,000 rounds as he did not take his finger off te trigger once they saw the US troops.... Well done film, but nothing new compared to the old one. I give 7/10.
Just caught part of the 1990 movie, "Memphis Belle". Enjoyable, but the CGI effects while dramatic looked very dated now. But the on the whole, the movie was highly evocative of that time period for the 8th AF in early 1943. 6/10 stars The Real Deal ..... 10/10!
Same here Mate. Not only double thumbs up but also a grin too ;-))at Did you know that Duke was the first choice to play Dirty Harry? This is Clint Eastwood got theecause the character was supposed to be much older than Eastwood was. I don't remember the exact reason why Eastwood got picked over Duke-but I think it was something as trivial as Eastwood signing the contract first. Also, I remember reading somewhere that Frank Sinatra was also chosen for the main rrole. I've seen Sinatra play a P.I. in Tony Rome--and was VERY good in that role. BTW, there is a sequal to Tony Rome-I just can't remember the name off-hand.
Great Pic of the Captain and his crew. The guy w/ the goggles on (first row) looks like James Cagney. I'd love to have a nice large copy of this photo to hang up im my "War Room".
I took a break from studying last night and watched The Frogmen starring Dana Andrews and Richard Widmark. I can't say I was particularly impressed. It seemed like the studio was desperate to find a WWII subject that had not been explored so they focused on frogmen. Weak story line and lots of dialog-free underwater scenes. I like Dana Andrews but cannot reccommend this one.
Lately I've been watching a nice deal of Band of Brothers, so much that.. I learned the theme song on the piano
