I'm a little disappointed with the History Channel these days. There are some very good programs, but I've recently seen shows covering the Twinkie, some program about furniture and most recently a show about Salt! I mean seriously a show about Salt, how far they have fallen! Does anyone else in the US see this trend of the History Channel going to the dogs, or is it just me? Compared to the quality programming on canada's History Television I'm even more dissappointed with The US versions. Does anyone else who has access to both networks think one is better than the other?
I don't get History Television but I do agree with you on the History Channel. They really bend the facts alot in order to make something more interesting than it really was so you will watch the show. Some things they just omit like a show I watched about a Hurricane fighter ramming a Do-17 bomber. They said the Do-17 had a pilot only and did not mention there are other crew members on a german bomber. They also said the bomber was going to bomb Buckingham Palace but then it said the bomber only had one engine and was going home. Might as well watch wrestling instead of the garbage they have been turning out.
And in fact, when the Do17 was rammed there was no-one aboard - the crew had baled out after a previous attack. There's no way Sgt Ray Holmes could have known that - but the Schmistory Channel should have.
Thanks for the information Martin. I could not remember Sgt Holmes name last night. You must have more brain cells left than I do.
and what's wrong with salt ? yes quite correct the History channel has been covering some strange schmukey items of late....every time a piece of Ww 2 news comes on I'll watch for a mere 5 minutes and then change channels as they have goofed up reality in such a huge way that I get sick to my stomach....pull out the old news reels for me anytime E ♪
I feel compelled, as a student of history, to point out some things about salt and history. I would find a show on the history of salt fascinating. Do you realize that salt has had an historical impact of real significance? Much more so than say, the Sherman tank, or blitzkrieg, or a British Mosquito, or the Battle of Stalingrad. Do you earn a salary? The word salary comes from the Latin word Salarium, which comes from the Latin for salt. Roman legionairies were paid a "salarium" as part of their pay. This was a pre-determined amount of salt. My point is that salt was much more important to the people of antiquity than most people realize. The above example is a minor episode in the story of salt in history. Salt played major roles throughout the history of mankind. Later
Indeed! I saw a documentary about salt here on Swedish television, and it was absolutely fascinating stuff, the way salt was of the top-three-or-so strategic resource for hundreds of years. Salt was, of course, one of the few alternatives when it came to storing food for prolonged periods of time, and as such vitally important to many countries. More shows on salt I say!
Sounds like FramerT has the right idea for you guys. I just noticed last night that I have the Military Channel. Much more specialized programming that I think you all would like. Later
I have not yet seen the Military Channel, but it seems promising considering the state of the History Channel these days. As a follow up to the salt issue, I need to make an addendum. A program on actual salt would have indeed been quite interesting, but the program was on salt mines. Granted a salt mine might have a few intresting points, even a few tales about plundered nazi gold and art, but this show was not the best I've seen on the History Channel, not by a long shot.
At least the history Channel does shows about history. You should watch the Discovery Channel........shows about motorcycles????? What happened to all the crocodiles eating the zebras and Lions chasing down gazelles.???? I really enjoyed that stuff. They can take that Harley Davidson crap out to the corn field.!!!
Well, after a week-end marathon of John Wayne flics...I've come to the conclusion every one's name was Joe or Mack .Even the coffee. "hey mack, how about a cup of joe"
well you guys know, the History channel needs to appeal to the modern public. all that dandy stuff about people pleasing. the channel is definetly going downhill even with the stuff they do show.
OK I used to sat on my ass and watch the history channel, I don't know a thing about Canada's history channel and couldn't care less, but I also used to watch the military channel a lot, so much I remember their old saying "go behind the lines". For about the past year, possibly two years, I had rather blow my brains out than watch either one of them channels, and its for one reason. The shows!!! their garbage, crap, just complete nonsense. Ok who gives a fly **** about truckers in the ice? who gives a crap what some fake store front sells fake things for a fake price? (pawn stars is more like pawn sh*ts) top shot is more like top sh*t because its garbage as well, its just garbage absolute garbage. But, the worst of the worst is weaponology. That show makes me wanna pee my pants when I just see a glimpse of it. The military channel also shows some of the same garbage but theirs is more difficult to pick up on that's complete sh*t. Most of the shows on the military channel are either recycled shows or a liberal anti-gun propaganda, or just wrong in all their facts such as future weapons, which is truly a piece of propaganda if I ever saw one, the guy who hosts it acts like he's god and knows everything and talks like everything he gets ahold of is god too, HK416 anyone? the Top Ten is also liberal propaganda and obviously the people who pick the top ten such as 'assault rifles' has never fired any of the assault rifles they talk about like fan boys. Now the history channel used to be great, but then ax men, american pickers, top gear, monster quest, food tech, shows like that came along, and erased ones like 20th century battlefield, great planes, dogfights, battlefield 360, patton 360, battles bc, the revolution (probably the greatest and longest documentary series ever) and you get the idea, their new slogan states it all "history, made everyday" NO ITS FREAKING NOT!!!! ITS MADE AFTER HUNDREADS AND THOUSANDS OF YEARS OF BLOOD AND SWEAT NOT FAT @HOLES SELLING CRAP THATS JUST TOTALLY FAKE while the camera pans in and out and all around and the actors stand there and pretend to bargain and they play epic music leading up to the price, seriously its not what normal people would do and thats why its just freaking garbage and I dont waste a single moment of my time on it, I just had to say this because the history channel, has gone to garbage, praise god please bring back the original show, and dont attack me for what shows I like or dont like or what i dont like about them, just try to understand that I'm pissed about them making shows about not history just garbage.
most of history television programming comes from history channel. It's pretty well the same other than that history television shows some Canadian history programs. That's just some programming, most of it is ice road truckers,MASH, that new weird or what series, and nostradomas crap. It's all crap televion. As far as I am concerned they should change the name of the channel. They make a mockery of history. The lucky times I have been able to watch a good history/war program doesn't count for the many times I that I flicked right passed it. I used to get history channel when I had american satellite, and I have noticed they are both pretty well the same channels. I prefered history international. (unfortunately that channel isn't available in Canada) It had decent programs, lots of repeated progams but still pretty good now I do enjoy military channel, I do have that station. My one complaint with that channel is that they never have new programming, everything gets repeated over and over. And now I flick pass it too. I can't take watching another episode of Hitler's bodyguards... It's time for military channel ro start airing new shows.. WW2 alone is rich in military topics. I don't get why they keep torturing us with with the same stuff.
I have been watching the History Channel for a good number of years, and the Military channel since it began. It is fair to say they have many repeats, and that the type of programming has evolved. In years past the History channel was known as the 'Hitler' channel because of the heavy WWII programming. So they began the Military channel to cover that area, and that History could expand to a more 'general history' programming. Shows like Pawn Stars, Ice Road Truckers and the others are on because they are popular. Simple as that.
