    Hi all,

I am hoping that someone can help me find some more information on a certain private who was in the 6th Battalion Manchester regiment. The only details I have are as follows:
    Pte William Baines 3530990
At the point of his letter he was based at Hessle, Near Hull, Yorks. I think it says A coy or H coy? He mentions being in Burford prior to Hull. There is not date on the letter but from research of this battalion I think it could have been December 1941. I only have the letter, not the envelope.
I have searched several sites for records etc listing his number but I get nothing.

I am hoping that someone can give me some further information.

    Many thanks Julie

Welcome and Good Luck in your search.

Testing my Google Fu I found this site which would appear to be useful for similar searches. Full and proper unit titles help find units without a battle record.

Thank you Lesley, I have posted a message there now. So fingers crossed. I think I am going to look into getting his services records. As this is the only way forward as I cannot find anything else.

Also thank you earthican, I had found that site before which had helped.

    Many thanks again Julie

    Hi Andy,
Thank you this info. I have found that they are not available to download so I have requested a price from kew for both sets as I really do not know what is in there. Or if they will be of any use to me.

I will wait to see what the cost is...
    Once again thank you.

I can tell you now Julie that the cost will be 1 pound per page, they cost a fortune. You won't know what is in the diaries until you get them, but sometimes in the appendices there is some really interesting stuff.
When you get the price, divide it by 10-that's the price Andy will copy them for :)

    Hi Julie

As Lesley says the National Archives charge around £1.30 per page to copy a file as to my 10p per page. Most war diaries on average contain 200 to 400 pages (£20 to £40) each although some are more and some less. You can click the red link below for more details on the service I offer people.

    Cheers
    Andy
