ANZAC day tomorrow...its a public holiday so I rarely post on the actual day, will see what happens on Thursday and post if interesting. The last post sounded in Darwin as the sun came up... I didn't go down to the cenotaph but I instead watched it on tv, huge turn out and a moving commemoration...for the first time for me I watched as members from the Australian ADF New Zealand AND top brass from the US Navy AND top Brass from the US Marines all stood together and stepped up together to lay wreaths together...was an EXCELLENT sight. Remember just over the shoulders of the army band in the background still lies British, US and Australian ships, still in the harbour, some still with the dead aboard. A good turn out! Many vets still in the crowd a handful from the bombing of Darwin... After the commemoration and prayers, the march through the streets began...obviously smaller than in other states Darwin still put on a great march, starting with a bunch of WW2 jeeps carrying those who would find it difficult to march... This was a first for me...US Marines march in the ANZAC parade! Probably the only city in Australia to have the legendary outfit to show its respects... Smiling soldiers...looking forward to a game of Two-up!
ANZAC day 2019 yesterday...a day off for Australians to reflect and commemorate...and the ANZAC day football match always between Collingwood and the Essendon Bombers...As expected the Collingwood magpies won the day (just). ANZAC DAY 2020 So, ANZAC day 2020 has rocked around, and not seen since the Spanish Flu...there were no marches, no cheering crowds...That didn't stop Australia honouring our dead and the Australian military. The general activity on the day was the morning, dawn services in your driveway! The Last Post rings out around the country... There are still some 14000 WW2 servicemen and women alive today. A chance to catch up with old mates and a game of two-up was sorely missed by the vets of all wars this year. Australia made sure they didn't feel forgotten. Even the MCG, usually hosts the ANZAC day Australian Rules Football - Always between Essendon and Collingwood - Stood silent except for a lone bugler. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
