This is sort of a spinoff of the "what happened today thread". Try to find something in history (preferably recent - 19th-20th Century) that happened on the date you were born. For example, my birthday is September 10th, which is when the battle of the Marne ended. Get the idea? Let's see how this works out... DUCE
I hate to say this......mine is August 6 th of this year......I think almost everyone knows what happened on this date back in 1945, 58 years ago over Japan.... ~E

oh you kids !...... Stefan, another August baby ! yeah man I'm not alone here ...... great month eh ? ~E Altenwolf
Hey! Allot of August guys here! 8/8/77 here! 1945 Soviets declare war on Japan; invade Manchuria On this day in 1945, the Soviet Union officially declares war on Japan, pouring more than 1 million Soviet soldiers into Japanese-occupied Manchuria, northeastern China, to take on the 700,000-strong Japanese army. The dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima by the Americans did not have the effect intended: unconditional surrender by Japan. Half of the Japanese inner Cabinet, called the Supreme War Direction Council, refused to surrender unless guarantees about Japan's future were given by the Allies, especially regarding the position of the emperor, Hirohito. The only Japanese civilians who even knew what happened at Hiroshima were either dead or suffering terribly. Japan had not been too worried about the Soviet Union, so busy with the Germans on the Eastern front. The Japanese army went so far as to believe that they would not have to engage a Soviet attack until spring 1946. But the Soviets surprised them with their invasion of Manchuria, an assault so strong (of the 850 Japanese soldiers engaged at Pingyanchen, 650 were killed or wounded within the first two days of fighting) that Emperor Hirohito began to plead with his War Council to reconsider surrender. The recalcitrant members began to waver.
Hey, I didn't notice that Duce, cool, got any plans? Erich, sure is a damned fine month, particularly as due to the holidays I always miss out on the ritual 'Birthday Beats' by the whole year at school! On the other hand, I am a Virgo which apparently explains a lot.
Only one I know of off hand is that the battle of the Ia Drang valley was going on 10 years before I was born on Dec. 1st. Kinda cool, since my dad was in it!
November 4th, 1918 was my grandfathers birthday. 1942 Rommel Begins the "Great Retreat" On this day, after losing the final and most famous battle at El Alamein, Egypt, General Field Marshall Erwin Rommel disobeyed Hitler's orders and began his five-month retreat. The grueling twelve-day battle had been a tragicomedy of errors for the Axis powers. In fact, when the battle began, Rommel was at a mountain resort in Austria, recovering from liver and blood-pressure problems. He arrived two days late, only to find his panzer army out-manned almost two-to-one by British General Bernard L. Montgomery's crew of 195,000 soldiers. Rommel also realized that food was running short and only seven issues of gasoline remained to supply his hundreds of vehicles. Weakened by constant British air attacks and a dearth of supplies, Rommel radioed Hitler of his intention to retreat on November 3. Hitler denied him with this rather unrealistic response: "It would not be the first time in history that the stronger will has triumphed over the enemy's strong battalions. You can show your troops no other road than to victory or death." Rommel was stunned. While the British army continued pummeling his troops, he fumed. He finally ordered a retreat in mid-afternoon of the next day, without Hitler's approval. But the damage of delaying retreat had been costly. Rommel later admitted that his obedience to Hitler's "victory or death" order was his one mistake of the battle.
Stefan...what's wrong with being a virgo?! LOL As for plans...by then I should have at least had my MRI on my shoulder, and depending on what they find will decide how quick I get surgery. Lots of parties, one for the family, one for the friends and one for the 'adult' friends. Lots of clubbing and waking up with a headache. But by this time next year I'll be in the Canadian Army Reserves....I had to put it off because of the stupid shoulder problems...bleh. What about yourself? any plans? To continue... I was supposed to be born August 15th (I was almost a month late)...which also happens to be Napoleon's birthday as well. DUCE
Well, apparently Virgos are passionate and argumentative, which can be a bad thing I find, or at least my GF does . Arrangements, well much the same really, BBQ for the family etc followed by a late night bowling match and whatever I can find to follow that...
you bowl?!?!?! that's EXCELLENT! I do too! 5 pin or 10 pin? What's your average? I bowl 5 pin and currently have a 216 average.... ....wow, I just realized how much of a geek I am DUCE
February 24 Saturday, February 24, 1940 www.onwar.com From Berlin... Revised orders for the attack in the west are issued. OKH has been conducting exercises throughout the winter and especially in the early days of this month because of dissatisfaction with the attack plan. Following Manstein's conversation with Hitler on March 17th and an OKH presentation to him on the 18th it has been decided to revise the plans to emphasize the role of Army Group A and an attack through the Ardennes. As far as technique goes the plans are fairly traditional. The emphasis is still not yet fully on the possibilities of the panzer advance. Rundstedt and Bock, who will be the principal commanders are, despite their considerable abilities, wedded to the conventional infantry-based ideas. Although the direction of the attack is certainly bold, the old school see early problems when it becomes necessary to cross the Meuse River. The tank enthusiasts, like Guderian, are more concerned about exploiting the advance after the crossing. In Copenhagen... A Scandinavian neutrality conference is held by the attending foreign ministers. In Rome... Germany and Italy sign a trade agreement giving the Italians an increased coal supply. Monday, February 24, 1941 www.onwar.com In North Africa... British and German forces engage in the desert for the first time. Tuesday, February 24, 1942 On the Eastern Front... The Soviet Winter Offensive is slowing in the face of greater German resistance. Admiral Halsey on board the USS Enterprise leads task force in a successful attack on Wake Island. Wednesday, February 24, 1943 In Tunisia... Rommel is appointed to command Army Group Africa which is to include 5th Panzer Army (von Arnim) and Italian 1st Army (Messe). The Axis forces are withdrawing to the Eastern Dorsale Thursday, February 24, 1944 www.onwar.com In Burma... British forces capture the Nyakyedyauk Pass. On the Eastern Front... August 24th, 1987 is my birthday(same as Sean Connery). The only three things I know of are the eruption of Mt.Vesuvius, the St.Bartholemew's Day massacre of Protestant Hugenots by Catholics in France(early 1600's?). The last is the taking of Paris(actually 25th, but someone else used a two week break in events so why can't I?) in 1944 by the Allies.
