As the scare about war with the Japanese spread, the citizens of the Pacific coast of America were hit by just those restrictions which had been in force since 1939 in Britain. All of a sudden, they were asked to achieve total blackout. After the first coast-wide practice, the newspapers reported Los Angeles as having been the most successful in obliterating every tiny chink of civilian light. The only snag was the huge sky-sign at the airport which shining brightly bore the legend, for all to see, 'WELCOME TO LOS ANGELES'.
