Would this have made a significant impart on the north african war ? either in 1941 or in summer 1942?

Yes. It would have driven the RN from the Med and made it very much easier to keep Rommel supplied. It could very easily have prevented the Allies from defeating the Axis forces in North Africa, with the battles being over the control of Egypt.

Malta was important, yes, but I´d still suggest getting Gibraltar first which would lead to the surrender of Malta sooner or later. Of course if you could not get Gibraltar then invasion of Malta, and I´d think even with losses of the Crete magnitude could be accepted if the island was captured.

gibraltar will be much tougher than malta to capture, unless with the assistance of franco.

without both gibraltar and malta under axis control, th fate of the british meditteran fleet will be very bleak indeed.
