U.S. Naval Degaussing station at Lambert’s Point on the Elizabeth River Norfolk, Virginia. I was stationed here in late 1967, first as a seaman pulling cables for the degaussing process (we demagnetized mostly submarines) and then made E-4 commissaryman and along with an E-6 we did some fine cooking for our small crew. A 50’ liberty launch provided a way from the station to the shore and back, where I had my 1964 Dodge Dart GT parked. We also had an occasional visit from an LPD or a carrier. The station has been there since about 1945.

Perhaps a tank of the SS pz divisions making a counterattack in Kharkov. My favourite battle. Leibstandarte, Das Reich and Totenkopf had arrived and Hitler ordered them to keep Kharkov. They would have been surrounded and annihilated by the Red Army but Häusser ordered retreat although against Hitler's order. This force enabled the Manstein backhand blow a bit later.

"Northrop XP-79B. Designed as an interceptor for the USAAF, it has it's roots in Northrop's MX-324 program. The pilot lay in prone condition, and the aircraft was made of magnesium. Crashed on it's first test flight (9/12/1945), killing test pilot Harry Crosby, who struck the plane while bailing out."

I've been there, but from the other side; the ship approaching is one of the original LHAs, which means a 50/50 chance she's my old home away from home, USS Saipan (LHA-2). Fairly early in her career since she has the 5" guns each side of the bow and the antennas for the Mark 86 gunfire control system on the foremast. The dark opening at the forward end of the island is for a ramp down to the hangar, from which there was another ramp down to the vehicle decks.

On the left of the photo is the Craney Island fuel depot and a Sacramento class AOE.

Barnes and sister Nassau each carried 12 F6Fs to Tarawa to be flown ashore when the airfield was made operational, but until then they did fly a few combat sorties.

F6Fs were not usually employed on Bogue Class CVEs, but I don't think this was the reason ;)
