Next year I'm lucky enough to be visiting the Ardennes. The tour includes following the trail of Kampfgruppe Peiper and a visit to the Bastogne area. As in previous trips abroad I like to be as informed as possible and with that in mind I'm compiling a book list.

One title I have in mind in Harold Winton's Corp Commanders of the Bulge. My question is simple. Has anyone read it? Any good?

I await any replies with interest.

Yes ! It's excellent ! Not meaning to gush, but I read it last year ( and I have read many, many books about the Bulge ). It's absolutely in my top-5 Bulge books.....I left a review on here somewhere ; I'll see if I can find it.......

I have it and read it a couple of years ago. I remember that it was OK, but not outstanding.

Consider reading Charles McDonald's, A Time For Trumpets. It is an excellent of account of the entire battle.

If you are going to Lanzerath, Belgium, read The Longest Winter, also. It is about the epic battle there that stalled Pieper right out of the gate, early on the 16th of December.

Thanks for the reviews and recommendations chaps. I'd be interested to know what your top 5 are, Martin?

Martin, you have me thinking more about it. I need to go dig the book out and look at it again. I remember that it was fairly detailed but I can't remember why it didn't grab me like it did you.

As I typed that, I wondered if someone would challenge me......

OK - here we go. Purely personal opinion, no apologies, and no particular order ; -

Battle Of The Bulge : Then & Now by Jean-Paul Pallud
Krinkelt-Rocherath : The Battle For The Twin Villages by Wiliam C C Cavanagh
Battle Of The Bulge by Hugh M Cole ( Official History)
The Battle Of The Bulge iIn Luxembourg : Vol.1 - The Germans by Roland Gaul
Corps Commanders Of The Bulge by Harold C Winton ( :p )

And OK, I'm cheating here, but bubbling under : -

Both Volumes of 'Duel In The Mist' by Haasler/MacDougall/Vosters/Weber
'The Devils Adjutant', 'Men Of Steel' and 'Sons Of The Reich' by Michael Reynolds
    All Hans Wijers' Bulge titles.

And I probably have at least 20+ other titles here.

With these in the car, you can feel and smell the Ardennes, and get to the bits the museums don't reach........................
