I thought the directors cut was long ( 3 hours and 22 minutes, but not long enough ), when I heard they made a mini series as well which was 5 hours long. Is this correct ? Where can I get it ?
I think it will be for Germany only, but I not that sure, but I wish I can see it, I love this movie, the first time was on 84. BTW I just got it in DVD!!! :smok:
They made originally both movie and 6 part miniseries. I bought that miniseries two weeks ago, it cost 40 euros here in Finland. Its 4 hours 42 minutes long and its presented as one complete film, so no episodes, just one loooong film. An article about that DVD: http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=11472 And where you can buy it? Google gave this result: http://www.dvdhuset.no/servlet/dvdhuset.filmforklaring?VareID=8642
"Das Boot" is the only foreign film I've ever truly enjoyed, though I'm sure there are others that I've not seen. A true masterpiece.
The miniseries is actually the original, the movie is just a shortened version (this is hard to believe). It was recently broadcast on the BBC but I managed to somehow miss every part of it...
AFAIK, mr. Petersen originally planned both miniseries and movie. And he made them both at the same time. So its a bit wrong to say that movie is shortened version of miniseries.
I thought that the movie was made f the exact same footage as the miniseries, the series just using more of it. Therefore you could say the movie is a shortened version of the series. But as you say it, the two are entirely different? I'm more sorry than ever for having missed it now!
No, they arent entirely different. In fact, I believe that series have exact same frames as movies, and much more. But as I said, they were both originally planned, neither of them were some "afterthoughts", meaning that shooting those scenes were done in order to fulfill the needs for both movie and series. There was no such brainstorms as "Hey, lets cut off those boring and useless parts of the series and make a movie!".
Today (actually yesterday) I managed to watch that miniseries. I invited few friends here and had some beers while watching that series. Considering that it is nearly 5 hours long, it was quite easy to watch. Miniseries has much slower starting than movies, they just sail weeks without anything significant to happen. Unfortunatelly, or luckily, my friends refused to watch an another submarine movie right away, U-571. Anyway, that series is very good but in my very humble opinion: if you are not fan, stick with Directors Cut.
Yes, atleast this R2 -region DVD has. It has Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, Hindi, Norwegian and Swedish subtitles.
I know just one Canadian DVD-shop, DVD Soon. Price seems to be 35.98 CAD for movie and shipping might be free. Here is direct link to that movie and here is shipping fees, note that free shipping-thingy. You might find that miniseries cheaper from some other shop, even from your local store, remember to ask for it.
Anyone seen the German movie "Stalingrad"? I have no clue who the director or actors are, but it was an eye-opening experience, brutal and probably very realistic, from the german infantry point of view.
QUESTION when Das Boot series was on in the UK recently. I vaguely remember there was a reference to using some kind of sail. What was that about?
Could they have been referring to the conning tower? I *think* that it is sometimes referred to as a 'sail' nowadays.
