Sixty-nine years after that mission, Cole and the other Doolittle Raiders — just five of the 80 are still alive — continue to be rock stars among old war heroes but admit to being a bit bemused by it all.
“I didn't think people would remember it after all these years,” said Dave Thatcher, 89, of Missoula, Mont., who flew on the Ruptured Duck, made famous in the book “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo.”
“We just figured it would be another bombing mission.”
The legend, if anything, has grown. The story of the raid is of a bold idea that had a single goal — stinging a hated enemy.
