Tomorrow (18 Mai) there are elections in our country. We have to choose people for the Parliament and the Senate.

The next parties are trying to win as many seats as possible.

    FLANDERS
    VLD: liberals
    CD&V: christian democratics
    SPA-spirit: socialists
    VB: right extremists
    N-VA: pary for Flemmish independency
    Agalev: green party
Vivant: left wing party (wants to give everyone a basic income)
BUB: wants to get back to a united Belgium (without communities)
Resist: party who comes up for the rights of the Muslims (creation of PvdA & AEL)
Liberaal Appel: leader used to be part of the VLD
Veilig Blauw: leader used to be part of the VLD
    LSP: don't know
    Solide: don't know

    WALLONIË
    MR: liberals
    PS: socialists
    Ecolo: green party
    FN: right extremists
    CdH: christian democratics

You see that for a country of only 10.000.000 inhabitants there are a lot of parties.

So who did you vote for and did they win or not ? If I could vote over there, I like the idea of the Vivant Party and would vote for them.
Do the partys over there spend zillions in cash like in the USA for TV ads and bribes ect. ? I would like to think some country could come up with a better system for elections.
Does'nt Belgium have a King and Queen also ? If so they sure keep a low profile.

I voted for the N-VA and I will know the results in the evening.

No, they don't spend zillions of money to all kind of campaigns. They go to markets, spread leaflets, putting posters at the windows, ...

I think that our system is good, because you don't have 1 party who does it all. Here you have a coallition of different parties, so there are compomises.

Yes, we have a king. But if Flanders gets independce - my opinion - than I want a choosen president and not a king.

If they tried to fine all the people who did not vote in the US they would start a riot! I am glad to learn more of how other countries run their elections though. Thanks for that bit of information.

Not to hijack the thread, but did they ever send anyone to prison for the child porn ring they had in Belgium years ago? Last I heard no one had did anything.

That´s interesting...A fine for not voting.

In Finland we are free to vote and that´s why I guess the voting percentage stays about 68-73%.

    -------

About that child p***. They just caught a man last week in Huddinge Sweden, 40+ old man with a family ( two kids ) who is suspected of being the main person behind the 1,000+ pics in the net.He is suspected of exploitation of over 40 children.....

      :(

You are talking about Dutroux. He abused and killed young children. He still hastn't been convicted.

Well, we didn't won the elections, because our party - the N-VA - only exists 2 years. It has 11.000 members.

A little bit of history. There used to be the VU (Volksunie) and they did a good job for more Flemmish demands.

After a lot of discussions in the VU, the VU dissapeared and a lot of the famous people went to the VLD, Agalev, CD&V. After that 2 parties were set up.

You have Spirit (who went in a coallation with SPA and went together to the elections) and you have N-VA (the leader is Bourgeois) and the went alone to the people.

We got arond 5% of the people on our side. For a new party that is not bad! Next year there are Flemmish elections and there we want to become a few seats in the Flemmish Parliament.
