Need to get the passport updated and lay in a good supply of hot dogs, brats and marshmallows. Hate to waste a good fireball. (Note: I'll get the beer locally)

This was a Russian speaking, he did go on to say the earth is flat and the latest analysis of lunar dust has confirmed the moon is made of cheese. Just as further revelations were to be made chaos broke out when Elvis entered the building. Brian

The threat of the use of tactical nuclear weapons has receded since the invention of improved conventional munitions that came into service from the 1980s. Before then "flexible response" was predicated on early use of tactical nuclear weapons as the only way to stop a massed tank attack. I can show you where we would have used them and why modern weapons would do the job more effectively. ;)) http://www.theobservationpost.com/blog/?p=1274

The Russians have shown themselves to be adept at using military force in ambiguous political situations. Ukraine, Crimea and Chechenya. They would have to think very hard before taking one a NATO member.

Oh have you seen Deutchland 83?

    On the serious side:
It's rather tricky to find out precisely what Mr Ivanov said, and in what context. The main coverage seeming to be the scandal sheets jumping on a couple of lines of quote... like they do.
Maybe in a day or two some more in-depth reporting or documentation might emerge... like it does.

On the even more serious side:
    Good.
I want my cold war back.
Nice binary lines and spheres of influence drawn.
The proper psychos kept in their boxes.
Rhetoric, politics, and the odd proxy conflict just to keep everyone on their toes, with the ultimate threat of MAD stopping any major player getting too silly too often.

Though... perhaps yet more seriously... The old cold war way of thinking has passed, despite many foreign policy types apparently refusing to accept it, and I'm not certain where the lines and spheres might be drawn these days. My guess could only be; quite possibly not where they were from 1945 onwards.
Damn this fluidity in current diplomatic situations - you knew where you were with an Iron Curtain.

Are things between the UK and France really that bad ? I know prices near Canne are high but nukes ?

Before the wall came down I was ashk to design a house for a guy in Auburn who wanted a true bomb shelter, bacteriological and nuclear radiation filters, vault door. I had to ask why, unless they were shooting at Ft Benning, 40 miles away and missed I thought we would be low on the priority list. . He still wanted it so I told when he came out in a month or so who would he talk to, the rest of us would be French fries, sorry, Freedom fries. He decided I was not serious enough and I lost the job. Good things do happen to good people ! I was saved by the threat of a nuclear attack :)

I think "our leaders" aren't that stupid. As soon as the first nuclear bomb drops we're finished.

You're probably still in much greater danger from someone drinking and driving or trying to use a cell phone and driving.

I remember back in the early '80s I had a mate at college who was a CND diehard. Rod was so utterly convinced he was going to die in a nuclear war before he was 25 he wouldn't make plans more than 24 hours in advance.
You couldn't say "pub on Friday"? because his standard reply was "a lot can happen between now and Friday". I often wonder if he woke up on his 25th birthday, realised he was wrong and had a nervous breakdown; I wouldn't have put it past him.

We always were in danger from such idiots but guess what, when you stop sleep walking the terrorists are here as well to give them a run for their money.

Could as well be Dr Goebbels citing from Streicher's "Stürmer"..... all hail to our illuminated Führer Adolf Putin! I am just waiting for the resident bunch of Putin toyboys to find this thread.

You think our "leaders" give a damn about us, they will be first in to the shelters and to hell with the rest of us.

Not really. Cell phones are a fairly recent innovation. It were illegal to operate a cell phone and a car at the same time it would be fairly easy to come up with a system that would be quite effective at identifying and prosecuting people who did so. Last set of stats I saw indicated that cell phone usage was roughly on par with alcohol consumption in automotive fatalities. It would be a lot cheaper and save a lot more lives to follow such a program than many of the antiterrorist programs. I'm not saying we shouldn't do both but it really helps to put things in perspective. The "sleep walking:" comment is pretty clear evidence you are incapable of it.

I hope you understand that if only 1 nuke hits for example New York or Moscow there will be hundreds of nukes flying in all directions which would affect not only the people but "our leaders" as well. No one and not even them would be safe for long in their shelters.

    Fail Safe........

realistically, I would think an ISIS type group would be the first to use a nuclear/bio/chemical type weapon....or NKorea if it thinks it's going to be overrun.......I don't think it's will they use it, .....I thinks it's when will they?

I don't think ISIS will ever get their hands on a nuclear weapon and I doubt North Korea will ever use it so there are no worries if you ask me.
Let's just hope that I'm not wrong...
