Is there one? I used to play the really original Squad Leader-Cross of Iron-GI: Anvil of Victory with friends, but now that one of us lives in California, another in south Florida, another in New York, and the last in Chicago, get-togethers are sort of difficult. Did anyone ever make something on the same scale as this game (squad level, individual leaders, single vehicles) that has a decent AI, and, most importantly, is turn based? I will never forget, in the VERY FIRST game we played, my friend Scott sent a triple stack of Russian guards infantry across the street (no leader), and my best leader, a German named Cpl Pollack cut loose with his LMG and I rolled a 2 resulting in a KIA of all three squads. My day of Squad Leader glory, lol!
There are 2 very good turn based WW2 games that I can think of. Hearts of Iron 3 is very good if you would like to control an entire country's armed forces and it's developements. Combat Mission is a very good game if you like to battle accurately with smaller numbers. Combat Mission Berlin to Barbarosa is a favorite of this forum. However I am thinking that the next generation of this game Combat Mission Normandy should be released within a couple months.
Steel Panthers is good. I've been playing it for years. Can also be played against another on the same machine on different machines or PBEM. And, an added bonus, it is FREE.
That's interesting Slip, I too play it but I got my version from here which is also free. winSPWW2 And post WW2 to present day is also free. winSPMBT: Main Battle Tank Granted dated by today's standards but still good.
I had the windows version on my old PC, but did not install back on this one. I liked the DOS version better. I'll try the present day version sometime soon.
Are you looking for PC or console? I've lately been playing this game quite a bit on the XBox. Only 400 points to buy. Panzer General: Allied Assault - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Holy Smoke Grenades! I REMEMBER Steel Panthers! OMG My brother and I used to hot seat battles on our Commodore 64. How cool is that? I downloaded both Steel Panthers and the modern version. I am going to have fun with these. Oh, is there any way to play them online with someone? That would be VERY cool, because I am now in California, while my brother is back in New York.
