... A grandson of former US president Harry Truman – the man who ordered the atomic bombings of Japan during the second world war – is in Hiroshima to attend a memorial service for the victims. Clifton Truman Daniel visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on Saturday and laid a wreath for the 140,000 people killed by the 1945 bombing authorized by his grandfather. Another atomic blast in Nagasaki three days later killed 70,000 more. "I think this cenotaph says it all to honor the dead to not forget and to make sure that we never let this happen again," Daniel said after offering a silent prayer. I read this article today. While I think it's a good idea to memorialize those who died, I'm one of those who believe Truman did the right thing to drop the bombs. I am not intending to re-open the debate on the morality of using them. There are other threads for that.
Personally, I agree, countless Allied AND Japanese lives were saved from the ravages of invasion, that's seldom included in the morality equation. I had originally added "I wonder what Harry Truman & Jacob Beser would've thought??", but decided to just post the link, comment left unsaid.
I would like to see Hirohito's descendants attending memorial services for the victims all over the Asia, Paciffic and USA. Japanese have created the horror, not Truman.
I agree with what's been said: its good to remember the dead on both sides, but Truman's son should in no away apologize (or appear to apologize) for his grandfather's actions. I'm anxiously waiting to see how the major media outlets twist this event if it becomes a major story.
They sure knew how they will be mostly remembered: "Now we are all sons of bitches." -Kenneth Bainbridge, Director of the Trinity Project, to J. Robert Oppenheimer, seconds after the successful test of the first atomic bomb, July 16th, 1945
Where are the memorials to the dead of China, the PI, and all the other nations the Japanese decimated with their own brand of barbarism? The Japanese are quick to point out those poor lost souls from the American A-bombs, but have never said they are sorry for their own behavior during WWII.
