I am new here, and I found out about this site by reading one of Kevin R. Austra's posts about the t.v. series Combat! I am a World War II Reenactor. I became interested in World War II because my grandfather was in the 101st company C in World War II and parachuted into Holland in September of 1944. He was shot in the leg by a German Mauser after being there for about two weeks and was sent back to England for therapy. He was told while he was in the hospital that the war would be over by Christmas and was told by the doctor that he was going home.

My grandfather never talked about this until him and I went to see Saving Private Ryan in 1998 at the theatre. He cried at the end of the movie and said, "they gave everything they could."

I got involved in World War II reenactment several years ago and I have got to meet many veterans like Walt Ehlers who is the last living medal of honor winner from the Normandy campaign. I have marched in a number of parades in Huntington Beach California for the 4th of July parade with Mr. Ehlers being our mascot. I now live in Atlanta Georgia and have joined up with another group out here called the "fiveohfirst" and am doing my first battle in April. It is fun but it is a good way to honor the vets and keep the memory alive of what these folks did for all of us.

I have read every book by Stephen Ambrose and books by many other authors. I am re-reading "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, William Shirer, for the fourth time.

    God Bless,

    Keith W.

Amazint, how many times that book has cropped up in my conversations over the last few days/weeks, and like you I'm re reading it from cover to cover. Never does any harm to revisit this one. Has to be on any ww2 buffs bookshelf.

    Welcome

Welcome Keith! This is a fine place and I can see that you have already met some of the fine folk who wander here! Might you have any photos of your re-enactments that you can share?

    Cheers!
