If you had time to do the research and the confidence to pen it what WW11 military subject would you like to write about, either covered in detail before or not? For me it would have to be a collection of stories from Irishmen fighting in each army, British, American, Australian, etc, Their experiences and reasons for joining up? What would you write about?
Finnish Waffen-SS men and their battles in Southern Russia summer 1942. Kursk and tank battles, especially the movements of Panther tanks. The Ferdinand tanks and battles after Zitadelle in Aug-Sept 1943. Joachim Peiper and December 1944- Battle of the Bulge.
DON'T GET ME STARTED!!! I guess Combat Cameramen and -photgraphers in Holland and NW Europe at this point...
Kai-Petri I think you have given this a lot of thought! [ 28. July 2004, 06:27 AM: Message edited by: Maverik ]
Kai I have quite a bit on the Ferdnands at Kursk and beyond.... Aside from that one of these days I should do something with my big notebook on TO&E's or, my wargame design notes (want to know a neat way to calculate vehicular mobility from historical data or, calculate the effects of HE in a quantitative systematic way? Got stuff on all that and more...). Or, maybe a history of electronic warfare in WW II....And then there are the miniatures rules: PanzerKriegsAkademie (tactical infantry / armor) or a currently untitled airplane game (yes, 1/72nd miniatures) that's great for an afternoon of beer and fun (it's still accurate too) or, WW II naval or....
I'd like to write an encyclopædia about WWII. Something with thousands of pictures, graphics, orders of battle, essays, testimonies and the main text being an objective view of the whole conflict. Yes! I'm an ambitious son of a… so what! P.D. I'd like first to finish my even more ambitious novel in the first place.
I'm currently researching several subjects that will hopefully end up as books. Firstly, Operation Millenium. Secondly, i would like to eventualy write a acciunt of the operations of the Desert Air Force. Unfortuanatly much of it will take time as i'm currently at uni and if all goes well will be for the next few years. But they are always there and i'm constantly researching.
This is a good topic Maverik, although my answer is more along the line of: 'What book would I like to read but can't because it doesn't seem to have been written?' I think a biography of Roger Bushell, the real life "Big X" of The Great Escape, would be quite interesting.
Well... Already written my Airborne Effectiveness... But if i could write about something I wanted to then it would be on the combat effectiveness of the Waffen-SS... or... The combat effectiveness of the armies during the battle for Normandy.
DWD, Jennifer Schwartz of the US is currently researching his life and writing a book about him. Just got an e-mail from her. She don't know when it will be published though. Still in the research fase. Stevin
Unfortunately, it seems that we all have our - if only I had time - projects. The demands of my job basically sucks all the creative energy out of me - and I typically go home drooling with a stupid grin on my face - brain dead. Now I'm depressing myself...
Thank you for sharing this information Stevin. I will keep an eye out for her book. [ 05. August 2004, 12:10 AM: Message edited by: Deep Web Diver ]
If it matters, I have several ideas for books - one in the works - fiction, based on Operation Unthinkable. If I only had the time ...
I also would write about alternative history. I live the endly possible outcomes to all of the complex decisions made in WWII.
