    AKA "Nacht der langen Messer"
I'm doing research about the Night of the Long Knives Purge and I have seen many times that this name came from a phrase in a "Popular German Song" but I have been unable to find the name, artists or any real information about this song. I could really use help with this one....

Hmmm I think this is an error, which having been repeated on the more simplistic history sites has gained some currency.

Have you seen this quoted in a book? I imagine not, however it is repeated on several history sites, but all the references look identical as if one person stated it and then lots of people simply cut and pasted it without checking.

There were only two songs of the time I can think of which were both popular and featured knives, one is "Mack the Knife" by Brecht; given his decided lack of popularity with members of the NSDAP it's unlikely anything he would have written would be used. The other is 'Wenn das Judenblut vom Messer spritzt.' popular amongst stormtroopers.

Perhaps have a listen to Hitler's Reichstag Speech of July 13th, 1934, or read it in English (Hitler Speech: July 13, 1934 ) I believe it's his first use of the phrase, I'd put my money on the phrase being invented by Goebbels if not the man himself.

Hope this is of some use.

    cheers,
