I would just ike to know how common the Iron Cross was in the Wermacht? By this I mean what percentage of officers recieved one. Most of the top German commanders seem to have one but, I see very few pictures of enlisted men and company grade officers with Iron Crosses. Other questions are, Was it common amongst enlisted men to recieve a Iron Cross? How frequently was the Iron Cross awarded? Was it only given to combat troops? Thanks, Reddog
Red: I'm not sure about the percentage or the distribution of Iron Crosses between officers, generals and enlisted men… but I know that in WWII some 3,5 million Iron Crosses II Class and 500.000 Iron Crosses I Class were awarded, as well as some 25.000 German Crosses and 7.500 Knight's Crosses. As a comparisson, in WWI there were 3 million Iron Crosses II Class, 450.000 Iron Crosses I Class and some 1.800 'Pour le Mérite' awarded.
