Anybody ever see any of the war movies that Japan made during WW2? I think Toho did a lot of them. A couple of years ago, while searching for a copy of the Yamato movie that came out back then, I remember looking at Toho's website and store. They had several of those WW2 movies for sale, but interestingly enough, they wouldnt sell them outside the country. Obviously they werent subtitled and apparently only meant for home country consumption.
I know there were many but, I only have one wartime Japanese movie, which is the one you mentioned. I only have it thanks to a generous member of this site. Same goes for wartime German movies. I also have this one thanks to the same Gent: Kolburg. I found both very well made and was a great "eye" into the wartime past of both of these Countries. Sometime in the past few months, TCM also played some wartime movies made by the Russians. I dont remember any of the titles but, the twio I saw I thought were excellent and were both a "window" into the way things probably were, in those hectic and uncertain days at the beginning of the war between Germany and the Soviet Union. I would love to see more of these type movies get exposure over here.

Hi Ray, I have heard of The Burmese harp and im wondering if that was the one I cought the tail end of yeasterday afternoon on TCM? It had either Jack Hawkins or Stanley Baker as a surrendered British Officer and Philip Ahn as a Japanese Officer. I didnt catch the name of the movie so I dont know if this was it or not?
