The book is The Simple Sound Sound of Freedom by Thomas Taylor. His post war recognition and awards from Russis are told on p 256-7.

That is an excellent book. Highly recommended reading to those who haven't done so already.

    A-58 - it would make a good mini-series.

Ian Gardner's book on Lt. Ed Shames (Third platoon, Co. E, 506 PIR, 101 Airborne) mentions another paratrooper who escaped and fought alongside the Soviets. Book is Airborne: The Combat Stories of Ed Shames of Easy Company.

506 PIR Don Ross was in Falknov an der Eger in Czechoslovakia when he escaped, fought alongside the Czech guerillas before joining the Russians. The Russians he served with finally met the U.S. First Infantry Div and at their junture he rejoined the Americans. See p 272-3.
