I've just learnt that Karl-Ludwig Johanssen has passed away. He was one of the very few Nachtjagd radar operators to be awarded the Knights Cross and his name will always be associated with that of Martin ('Tino') Becker, with whom he shared 58 victories. Karl-Ludwif Johanssen is also credited with having shot down three adversaries using his twin 7.92 machine-guns. I had the privilege of meeting Herr Johanssen at the Nachtjagd signing event in Wendover, March 2006. Here he is on that day, in conversation with the wife of Nachtjagd pilot Otto Fries.
yes heard about this earlier and still a bit stunned. was in correspondance with Karl several times, some great mission highlights some of which different than in Theos big book. he was very insistant about the 2 lancs and B-17 he shot down with a single mg 131 in their Ju 88G-6 on that March 45 night. In fact I have the full nights crew report of that downed BC B-17..........from survivors Karls mind was very sharp to the end he even gave me rich details on their two Ju 88G-6's - the specs and camoflage. another chap that will be sorely missed ........
He certainly will be missed Erich. He was one of the last ones to score before the final 1945 armistice.
