Very close to Viipuri are the battlefields of the biggest battle ever in the Nordic Countries, the battle of Tali-Ihantala.

Of course there was fighting also right in the city area: in the southern suburbs in the Winter War in 1940 until the end of that war, right in the center briefly on 20th June 1944, when the city was lost, and north of the city's medieval castle at Tienhaara (the Cross roads) on 22nd June 1944, where the soviet attack was stopped for the first time.

Of course getting a Russian girlfriend is a good option too, as Tamino suggested. It's very easy too...

I'll definitely check it out Kai :) My friends are I are eager to explore Karelia, both Vyborg and the wilderness itself... I am going to try and find some Talvisota/Zimayaya Voyna/Winter War sites along the way too

    Cheers Hufflepuff!

The round tower next to the Vyborg market place is a famous historical place, too, and I bet there is a restaurant or the kind inside. If possible check it and have a beer inside... ;)

All the more reason to look forward to the visit - I love Russian culture and architecture and it's amazing seeing it every day but I am always up for seeing new things ... especially in this case Finnish / Ingrian things!

As for the babes... I still need to do a little choice making... in one of my seminars I am one of two guys in a group of about twenty or so. Also the only American. Needless to say, target-rich environment so to speak :D

Don't miss the chance to visit Mariinsky Theatre. (If you aren't too late for this season)

Most of the famous architecture in and around St. Petersburg is actually not Russian, but Italian and French - if we are not talking about the soviet suburbs...

    About the babes - enjoy...

The Mariinski ballet is most recommendable!

This is definitely true. Pyotr I and the Tsars after him were crazy about French and Italian architecture... Isaakievsky Sobor (St. Isaac's Cathedral) was built by Monferran along with the Column to Aleksandr I.

    Добрый вечер and g'devening, gents...

I visited Vyborg / Viipuri today with my friends and have a ton of good things to say about it. I will post pictures in a bit after my camera finishes charging!

As for those who suggested the visit/encouraged it, y'all are right - what a great little town and very different from Saint Petersburg.

Thanks for the pictures. You're right; very different from St. Petersburg.

The feel is different too. And some firsthand observations: The Karelian Isthmus is very easy to defend, it seems. Lots of bogs to impede tanks and infantry and endless forest.
