News is just coming in of a suspected terrorist attack in London this morning.
There have been at least six explosions-three on the Tube, and three on busses. There are at least two confirmed deaths at a Tube station-Aldgate?-so far.
I tried posting links to the articles on aol, but they won't work.
    Anyone got an update?

Hi guys, I'm still in sheffield but been checking various family members are ok (they are, my mother is working with a crisis team so I got to hear some interesting info on whats going on). Just hope Martin is ok!

Mind you, it is good to know the reaction seems to have been 'rather British,' one of my mates was near Kings Cross, he sent me a txt saying 'am fine, so are the rest of the family, going to the pub, take care.' Made me laugh.

    :(

Now we'll just have to wait and see who did this, though money and a letter indicates Al-Quaida...

While the events are both horrible and disgusting, there is a bit of positive news in that the emergency services and the plans for this eventuality seem to be working well.

Noticed this too - one comment from a Londoner was that "well, at least there is a reason for the tube not running today." Some people probably consider comments like that rather tasteless, but personally I heartily approve.

    Bang on!

As for the emergency plans, well my mother works for a hospital in North London and I was a council worker for a bit so we both got to see the preparations for this kind of event (she is on one of the crisis teams) and they were ready for casualty rates much greater than this. The emergency services can handle it and I'm glad they didn't mess around and went ahead with calling in the army to help the police (what with all the fuzz in Scotland).

Speaking in Downing Street, the UK prime minister said: "It is a very sad day for the British people but we will hold true to the British way of life."

Mr Blair said it was reasonably clear the attacks had been timed to coincide with the G8 summit in Gleneagles.

"It is through terrorism that the people who have committed this terrible act express their values and it is right at this moment that we demonstrate ours," said Mr Blair.

Well I know a few things to do, if they get these guys, and one of these things got to do with boiling oil.

I noticed that all the services worked very well, and less chaotic as in the US with the Twin Towers, a compliment to them from Holland.

I'll refrain comment on the above post...neither time nor place.

I think Martin will be in touch soon.
Imagine just getting back home is his priority right now.
    Let's hope, anyway.

    Erich,
It's known to be terrorist activity now. Some chickenshit bunch of chancers calling themselves "AL-Quaeda's Jihad in Europe" tried to claim responsibility on an Islamic website a few hours ago, but no-one's ever heard of them before.
The fact that the death-toll is so mercifully light (so far) either means it wasn't them, or our security services are better than they get given credit for. That's no consolation whatsoever to those killed or injured, or their families, and it still doesn't answer who did do it though. In fairness, the IRA gave our emergency services an extended training period, so they should know what they're doing by now. [IMG]
Judging by the traffic jams etc on the tv, I wouldn't bet on Martin getting home anytime tonight. Hope he's ok.

The authorities won't be drawn Erich, but every 'expert' the tv people have dragged on so far has compared the remains of one of the buses with the remains of a typical suicide bus bomber in Israel; they certainly look the same, but the bomber might only have been transporting the bomb to the real target when it went off prematurely. The driver of one of the buses survived, so with a bit of luck the authorities should get some major leads from him on the bombers' identities.
The Police also refuse to comment on whether at least some of the victims might have been the bombers. And still no-one credible has claimed responsibility.
Casualties now 53 dead, 700 injured.

What the West really needs to do is change the discourse on war that has been badly skewed away from traditional values by the left. And, yes, it was the *#$%# LEFT and LIBERALS in this case that have changed how people talk and think about war.
Without the long lecture on how and why, what the West needs to do is start saying: "These Islamic and Arab terrorist groups are the EMENY and we absolutely hate them," with all the meaning that that implies. We need to start thinking as society did in previous major conflicts between cultures. Hate the enemy. Have a real desire to kill them. Have an overwhelming opinion in society that they will be defeated whatever the cost or burden.
This attack should be looked at absolutely no differently that a German raid during the height of the Blitz in 1940. The West should be talking about retaliation and hunting down and destroying / killing the enemies that did this.
Talk about police investigations, collecting evidence, inditing the criminals involved and arresting them has become tiresome and ineffective. There is nothing to investigate! Radical Islamists who are our enemy attacked us. Let's hunt them down and kill them with overwhelming firepower!
If the West is really at war with radical Islam then the West needs to start talking and acting like it. Certainly by everything I've seen these groups think they are at war with the West on exactly those terms.
Radical Imams and mosques; round up the members, put them in a PoW camp and bulldoze their buildings or some such similar act. Label them traitors and enemy combatants as specified under the rules of war. Label those in places like Afganistan and Iraq fighting the Western coallition enemy combatants and treat those not wearing a uniform as sabatours or spys. Have them summarily courts martialled and then shot.
It's about d$#& time the West told liberals who want no part of anything approaching actual war to shut the f#$@ up and let more serious and realistic minds finish this thing.

    TA,
You can probably guess which parts of that I agree with, but let's wait till we have DEFINITE proof of who carried out these attacks. Immediately blaming the obvious suspects is exactly the desired reaction of those responsible. Why else has no-one claimed responsibility?
In 30 years of IRA terrorism, Britain never saw fit to declare war on Ireland itself.
Once more we're dealing with a few psychos who DON'T speak for the majority.

What, the big one last year? The Spanish authorities arrested several Islamic militants very soon afterwards, and Al-Quaeda claimed responsibility for it too.
Haven't heard of any other ones........
