I am doing research into my grandfather's service as a Marine aviation mechanic and I'd like to find some websites or books that could educate me on the subject. I have found two books this far. One is about the history of Marine aviation in WWII by a robert sherrod and other is the US Marines Order of Battle in World War II by Gordon Rottman. I am in the process of finding his specific unit. All I know is that he serviced torpedo bombers on Tinian and MAY have seen the Enola Gay sitting by itself on a tarmac. We are in the process of acquiring his military records so that should be of some help. If anyone can point to me to some other sources, I would be very thankful. My grandpa passed away in 2001 of Alzheimer's, so this is my way of keeping him alive for future generations of our family. He was more than a Marine to me--no offense leathernecks--but his service was something he was always very proud of. On his casket is the Anchor and Globe emblem. Because they meant so much to him the Marines will always hold a special place in my heart.
The "Enola Gay" was only named that just before the mission, because Paul tibbets was the CO of the 509th CG and not an aircraft commander. I would start by "googling" Marine torpedo squadrons and seeing which were on Tinian from 6 August. You might also check maintenance squadrons...... Hope that helps, Brad
