Recently found John Scalzi. His "Old Man's War", first of six books in the series, is fascinating. I'm on the third book right now, and look forward to the next ones.

People have called Scalzi "the logical heir to Robert Heinlein." I saw that and thought "Challenge accepted!" I'm glad I did. He doesn't create worlds, he presents them.

But not that damned Paul Verhoeven directed and written by Edward Neumeier movie. That was an abortion. Verhoeven told Neumeier what to write based on having read the back of the paperback.

Yeah there are a bunch of versions…The original with British artillery is my favourite.

War of the Worlds, the original, had the Martians using steam-powered tripods IIRC. Very Victorian.

This is in my top five best books written...

Twenty-four hours ago Gil MacDonald and his men had been fighting off an ambush in a Vietnam jungle. Now, thanks to some kin of spell, they were in the middle of this Fantasy Land filled with flying dragons, wizards, crazy castles and dispossessed princes.

They get transported out of Vietnam in their APC - Coramonde needs someone to battle a dragon thats been cooking its knights...How Gil and his men deal with the Dragon (they wont get sent back unless they do) is ultra cool...
