Recently in researching my family tree, I started delving into the life of my Uncle, Montague William Saunders, b 1922, who served in 166 Sqn as a Flight Engineer. His plane was damaged in the Raids on either Mailley Le Camp, or Montdidier on 3/4th May 1944 (Not sure which), and whilst he was injured during the raid, the daily express shows on 9th May 1944 details of the plane that was brought back whilst rigged to allow others to help the pilot - PO L Hunt - to control the plane with the damage sustained. I would appreciate knowing more about my Uncle - he received a DFM on 22nd July 1944 for his part in getting the plane back, and the crew / sqn which he served with. Thanks
If you are still interested I have quite a bit of info on the crew. The DFM was an immediate award for the Friedrichshaven raid in April 1944.He was injured and taken off operations but the rest of the crew(less the tail gunner who was killed in the combat with the fighter ) carried on operating and were all lost on a raid in france in junev 1944.Email me if still interested on MJC41uK at YAhoO DOT cO DoT Uk .Cheers Mark
