    Mr. Harry Whittington

    Mr. Harry Lee Whittington, 87, of Frederick, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at the Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Walkersville. He was the loving husband of Annabelle Baker Whittington.


    Born in White Hall, Va., on Aug. 10, 1921, he was a son of the late Lewellyn Laython and Nellie Elizabeth Burke Whittington.

    Mr. Whittington proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II in New Guinea and had received many ribbons and medals. He was retired after 42 years as a heavy equipment operator for the M.J. Grove Co. in Frederick.

    He was a life member of the Amvets Post # 2 in Frederick and the Independent Hose Company. He also was a member of the Burkittsville Ruritan Club and the Edwin C. Creager, Post # 168, American Legion in Thurmont. He attended the Day Break Adult Day Care Center.

    Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Ronald Whittington and wife, Debbie, of Frederick, Dennis Whittington and wife, Margery, of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Shirley A. Almendinger and husband, John, of Dunellen, N.J.; one brother, Lewellyn W. "Pete" Whittington of Hagerstown; five grandchildren, Chris Whittington, Brett Davis, Teri Kissner, Brian Smith and Tamara Lorivener; and three great-grandchildren, Collin Kissner and Megan and Hayley Davis; also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by nine siblings, Henry A. Whittington, Douglas K. Whittington, Betty Randall, D. Louise Wood, Ruth E. Whittington, Lucy M. Swisher, Marie A. Flook, Mary H. Baugher and Virginia Hutzell.

    The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. Rev. Burnis D. Barrett will officiate.
    Interment will be in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

    Pallbearers will be Paul Muehl, Chris Whittington, Brett Davis, Tom Kissner, Carroll Huffer and Charles Diggs.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Western Maryland Chapter, 108 Byte Drive, Suite 103, Frederick, MD 21702 or to Day Break Adult Day Care, 7819 Rocky Springs Road, Frederick, MD 21702.
