Rippeon, of Lewistown, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Ira L. "Pete" Rippeon, whom died Nov. 22, 1981. Born in Lincolnshire, England, she was a daughter of the late M. A. Blackman, R.A. F.-M.B.E. (Member of the British Empire) and Evelyn Booles Blackman. She attended school in England and the Middle East, where she obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees. She also attended nursing school in London and Dunstable, where she earned her S.F.N. (fever nursing) and S.R.N. (registered nurse) C.N.B. degrees. While nursing in London during the Blitz, she was severely injured. Mrs. Rippeon taught school in Frederick County for a number of years. A member of All Saints Episcopal Church, in Frederick, she was also a member of The Daughters of the King, and a former member of Elstow Abbey in Bedfordshire, England. She was a member of the Lewistown Homemakers Club for more than 50 years, serving as president twice, and served as vice president of the Frederick County Homemakers Club two times. She was appointed by three Maryland governors to serve as a member of The Citizens Review Board for Foster Care. For many years, Mrs. Rippeon enjoyed reading, embroidery, knitting and her family. Surviving is her son, Glenn Patrick Rippeon and wife, Rae Ann, of Lewistown; a daughter-in-law, Delista Ann Rippeon of Lewistown; a grandson, Scott David Rippeon and wife, Rose Ann, of Lewistown; a granddaughter, Jill Marie Wilds and husband, Conely, of Gaithersburg; great-grandchildren, Joshua Scott Rippeon, Sara Catherine Rippeon and Melissa Renee Wilds; a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. And Mrs. Patrick Blackman; a sister, Mrs. Peggy Farr; and nieces and nephews, all of England. She was preceded in death by her son, David I. M. Rippeon; a nephew, Michael Andrew Farr; and a brother-in-law, Derrick Lawton Farr. Mrs. Rippeon loved her family and friends without reservation and was known as having the "guts" to stand up for what she believed in. In the words of Nurse Cavelle, "before she was shot by the Germans during World War II, standing before God, I must have no hatred or bitterness toward anyone." The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont, at which time services will begin with the Rev. Tom Momberg, rector of All Saints Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont.
