I have got some info on these types of weapons being used on the Normandy Beaches. SWORD: WN 23 (Nearby was a multiple rocket launcher battery, 20 x 32cm Wurfgerät). OMAHA: WN 67 (38 x 32cm Wurfgerät though this may be the total along the whole area). UTAH: Brucheville (6 to 8 x 28/32cm Nebelwerfer 41). There were also reports of rockets at Gold and Juno, but I cannot confirm this. Reports say that due to Artillery fire the systems wire connection’s were severed and they were rendered usless. Regards Yan.
A Nebelwerfer 41, owned by a re-enactor, displayed at the AHEC, Carlisle, PA, 16 May 2009. Photos are resized for the Forum. If anyone would like high-res versions, just let me know. Dave
Nice photos Dave, There was another type of Rocket projector called the 8cm Raketen-Vielfachwerfer, a copy of the Soviet Katyusha, it was not made in any large number but had 24 x 8cm Rockets mounted in rails. It was mounted on the Sd.Kfz 4 (Maultier) and also captured Somua MCG & MCL Half-Tracks (le ZgwK 507 (f) & Auf M gep ZgkW S 303 (f)) I think the main users were the SS. another rare weapon was the ''Mittlere Schutzen Panzerwagen S 307 (f) mit Reihen werfer'' it was a multiple self-propelled Mortar, it carried 16 x 81mm captured French mortars. I have some more stuff on German Rockets, I hope my info is good I did this a long time ago. 8cm multi-launcher It had the nick name "Himmler received organ’’. The 1.290 kg launcher rail frame was mostly mounted on French Somua 303 (f) half-tracks and was fired in a volley of 48 x 8cm rockets, which was 705mm long and 6.6 kg weight, they contained 0.68 kilograms of explosives mounted on long steel rails. The 0.45 kg of propellant produced a maximum speed of 335 m/s. maximum range was 6,000 m, and scattered the volley in an area of 265m long and 162m wide. The weapon was produced by Brno and twelve were made, they equipped the 521st and 522nd SS multiple-launcher batteries. SS-multiple-launcher battery 521 The battery was equipped with 1 x 7.5 cm Pak and 4 x 8cm multiple launchers from March to May 1943 in Lanling. In May 1943 it was attached to the 2nd battery SS-Panzer Corps, it worked alongside the 102nd SS Werfer Abteilung. After an experiment to use missiles against partisans, the battery came in back to Lanling in 1943. It was re-equipped and sent in April 1944 the Narva front. In the Kurland-Kessel, the unit was destroyed after the ammunition ran out and its Gunners continue to fight as infantry. On 1/15/1945, the remaining troops were evacuated and reorganized in Luebbing and ended up part of the 5.SS Mountain Army Corps sent to the Oder front where they joined the 506th SS Werfer Abteilung. The battery was completely destroyed in the battle for Berlin. SS-multiple-launcher battery 522 The battery was created in Lanling in March 1943 and named the 101st SS multiple-launcher battery and was attached to the 1st SS Panzer Corps. It fought in the Kursk offensive in October 1943 and then went back to Lanling to be refreshed. In March 1944 the battery went back to the Eastern Front and fought as part of the 3rd SS Panzer Corps. In November of that year, the division was disbanded. In January 1945 the battery was re-formed and was sent to the Oder front, where they remain under the command of the 506th SS Werfer Abteilung.
