    Greetings:

My father was a Sherman III (M4A2) crewmember in the 2 Polish Corps, 2 Warsaw Armored Brigade, 6 Armored Regiment (Children of Lwow), HQ squadron fighting in Italy.

Before he died suddenly last year, I thought I had asked him everything there was to ask about his military service - but I didn't realize at the time that Polish Shermans had individual names painted on them, because none of the photos he passed on show the sides of any their tanks.

His HQ squadron had a total of 4 Shermans, and all of them had names beginning with the letter "L". The 3 known names are: Lwow, Lot and Lech. Does anyone know the name of the 4th tank?

Thank you in advance for your reply! :D

    Thank you very much, Danyel!

I am grateful to you and anyone else here at the forum who may be able to come up with the thus-far elusive answer.

    Best regards,

    Thank you, Gunter!

I'll take a look - there is a Polish book out by Mr. Kaminiski that has pics of the three known Shermans - I'll check to see if they have numbers in the pics or caption.

    All the best!

My guess would be "Lew", sice lions are the symbol of Lwow and there was a tank named Lwow. It's only a guess, unfortunately.

I've found some info on tank names in other regiments. I'll try to find some more. Maybe I'll bump into what you need.

EDIT: whooops, sorry bout the post below. I pressed quote instead of edit and didn't even notice. Delete, please.

    Thanks, Airwolf!

"Lew" is actually a really good guess. I'll run that by one of the few surviving regiment veterans in the UK the next time I call him. He was in a different squadron than my father, but he is trying to get a hold of someone in signals who is still alive. That person apparently spent a lot of time with the HQ folks, so maybe we can jog his memory.
