Have followed this site to some degee for a couple of years and almost daily for the last few months. Decided to join as I've seen a few cases when I could throw in my two cents. My name is Mike and I live close to Dallas TX.My forum name was chosen to honor the ship named after my hometown: USS VINCENNES CA-44 sunk off Savo 8/9/42.I became interested in WW II back some 55 years ago. Primary interests are aircraft and U S navy. I have a large collection of books that I've acquired over that time. Some of my first books were Morisons's history of the navy in WW II.My father and about 5 uncles served during the war. One of the uncles was in a postion to change world history if the second hand story I was told is accurate. In any case, he was the subject of major articles in both Leatherneck magazine and American Rifleman.
Welcome aboard, Mike. Glad to see you've decided to post. As you have seen, there is plenty of information about, and we always welcome new insights. Jump in, the water's warm.
As far as I know the magazine articles are not on line. I have scans of one of them and actual copies of the other two. All three are of biographical in nature as he was one of the world's best pistol shots during the 40's and 50's, and are slanted toward that part of his life. He was also mentioned in a late 60's magazine article about the High Standard silenced .22 pistol as the article named him as one of the people to whom it was issued. He never spoke of his war experiences until the last few years of his life, and then only to another uncle who told me an extremely brief version of the one story I alluded to.
