I recently spoke with the son of a 3rd Parachute Battalion soldier who was at Arnhem in 1944 and he related that his late father was a Vickers machine gunner possibly attached to 8 Platoon of C Company. My first thought was shouldn't be have been in Support Company in the MMG Platoon? I then looked in the book 'Who was Who' which gives the order of battle for the 1st Airborne Division at Arnhem. In my (1992) edition 3rd Battalion did not have a MMG platoon in Support Company but all the other 5 parachute battalions at Arnhem did have one. Does anyone know a reason for this?
Why were the Vickers farmed out to the rifle companies? I'd have thought it would have been a 'heavy carry' for the men involved, never mind all the extra ammo required.....or were they allocated one of the scarce jeeps?
