I was reading a few older topics before posting this and I noticed some people aren't too big on the Pearl Harbor movie. Neither was I until I picked up the 4 Disc Director's Cut....It's edited to include action they couldn't show in theaters due to a PG-13 rating to entice more people to see it. This is the R version with changes in the action sequence that you will notice. Rolling heads, the body of a Japanese pilot, head shots and just small differences. The extra features are well worth it too. The Super 8 footage montage is pretty good along with a lot of historical documentaries. The packaging it comes in is pretty fun and rounds out the dvd well. Like I said, I thought this movie was little more than mediocre when I first saw it, now I think it's a must have war DVD. [ 07 July 2002, 11:28 PM: Message edited by: SpitfireMkII ]
The only things I liked about the movie were the fuighting scenes and the earlier bit where the pilot was in England during the BoB.
My question would be why bother, a good start would be to cut all the stupid inane love story out of it, of course then you'd be back down to two disks, and they couldn't charge as much, defeating the whole purpose
I liked "Pearl Harbour" a lot just because the marvellous effects. The Battle of Great Britain is simply the best. They ruined it with a very bad love-story and with idiotic historical errors. I insist: what the hell was Yamamoto doing on board of one of the bloody carries?! If the charachter woud have been Admiral Nagumo, then is OK (by the way, the actor did look more like Nagumo than Yamamoto)... And they ruined the film even more taking away good scenes as they did in Titanic. They cut off important historical details to give more time to the filthy love-story. Why couldn't they do a good war & love film like "Enemy at the Gates", which is far more balanced.
Hmmm..interesting.. I thought the director´s cut would be waste of time and money but now I must at least ask my friends if anyone bought it, and have a look. ( Just noticed this bit in the forum ) Or maybe more people have seen the director´s cut in the Forum by now?
I just watched last night the director´s version on the 4CD pack. The action scenes were now much more "interesting" as you could see the devastation caused by bullets and bombs. And understand the cruelty of war. There are not so many heroes left after the war but loadsa dead comrades. The original version is like " Barbi and Ken in Pearl Harbor" I think now.. If you got the original one, loan the 4CD version. The Director´s cut has tens of removed scenes, probably a couple of hundred actually, and they do add to the feeling of terror, as you see bullets by Zeroes going through soldiers, a head without a body or several parts of body lying around on the deck etc etc etc..too many to tell all here. The censor did its job with this movie. No wonder it turned out to be so lame in the end. With the additions it truly has more "kick" in it, though the romantic scenes...well, you can always skip them... [ 19. January 2003, 03:55 AM: Message edited by: Kai-Petri ]
Saw it a long time ago and listened to the director's commentary. This was the version Bay intended all along as "his" cut and shot from the script, knowing he would have to release an edited down versionof the film as a PG13 theatrically. Bay and Bruckheimer had a deal that the unrated version was always set to be released on dvd just so it would be "out there". Its the only version worth having or seing. It doesn't fix the sappy love story or over the top comic book action sequences. It doesn't chop out the crappy Doolittle raid 3rd act America has to win cop out. But having seen it, it does make the movie's existence a little more tolerable.
