"WACO (February 05, 2010)-The latest series of commemorative postage stamps featuring a local World War II hero goes on sale Friday. Waco native and war hero Doris Miller is one of four U.S. Navy icons being featured on a new set of commemorative stamps issued by the U.S. Postal Service. The U.S. Postal Service is unveiling its “Distinguished Sailors” series at the Doris Miller YMCA, located at 1020 Elm Street in Waco. Rep. Chet Edwards is scheduled to speak at the 1 p.m. assembly. Killed in action in 1943, Miller is recognized as the first black American hero of World War II for his actions on Dec. 7, 1941, aboard the battleship West Virginia." http://www.kwtx.com/home/headlines/83638557.html
Thanks for this Jon, I had not known that "Doris" was going to be honored on a stamp. Im going to be buying it to add to some others featuring Audie Murphy, John Hines etc ;-)) Im a "fan" (for lack of a more proper term) of Dorie Miller and I thinks its ABOUT DAMNED TIME, that he gets more and better recognition. Im hoping that he'll eventually also be added to the honored list of Medal of Honor Recipients-someday soon ;-)) Other stamp releases this year of note that I wouldn't mind getting are: Those other Distinguished Sailors. Kate Hepburn (May 12th release) Bill Mauldin (March release) Cowboys of the Silver Screen: Tom Mix, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and William S. Hart (April 17) Sunday Funnies: includes, Beetle Bailey, Archie, Garfield, Dennis the Menace and one moe (July release)
