Seeing as how I cant yet post in the regular forum I will try posting with a picture here. Dont know how long we must stay in the new arrivals forum. Back in March '45 (around the 26th) the Engineers brought up aluminum boats and paddles for the crossing. Usually one boat per squad. The Rhine was about 1000 yds wide but it seemed like 1000 miles wide with a good river current. Our anphibian Sherman tanks took quite a beating and several sunk due to the canvas flotation getting shot up. We paddled like hell and many of us made it across to the far river bank and then fighting our way foreward. Tank support was bad due to not all making it across till the bridge was repaired and more of the 756th tank Bn. crossed. Hopefully I am posting a picture of the Anphib. Sherman if it comes out.
Here's one of the best shots of the 3rd ID in the Rhine Crossing. Wonder if any of J3rdinf's buddies are in it: Steve W.
