Why wasn't TK421 at his post?
Because he'd been killed out of shot, but presumably by Han Solo, who then feigned a downed transmitter while dressed in TK421's uniform.

Spare a thought for us oldies - when I saw the film it was THX1138....
thx1138 and tk421 were one and the same.
He wasn' at his post as Han blasted him to steel his uniform. They were guarding the falcon in A New Hope whilst the scanning crews went in.
Apparently THX1138 was the original name used in the screen play but it was changed to TK421 for the film.
Very good, Oli -- I thought I was the only HBP fan here
What's the direct link between Commander Straker and Captain Blue? Not just that they were both Gerry Anderson characters...
In the ORIGINAL film (before they called it A New Hope, ie the '77 release) he was actually called THX1138, which started the geeks off because THX1138 was the title (IIRC) of Lucas' first SF film.
